Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

just FYI if you compare pics of this jacket to the down puffers on Eddie Bauer's website, the EB jackets have denser quilting (the puffy rectangles). The Costco jacket has nearly half the amount of stitching. Larger quilting means fewer lines to sew, therefore faster and cheaper to make. Denser quilting means that better insulation because the filling less room to shift around, it traps heat better, and it packs down smaller for travel. The Costco jacket is filled with a combo of "down and feather" but the other one just says "down". Feather is going to include those pokey feather bits that come out. $40 is still a good price for what it is, but the better quality jacket is only $25 more on EB.

These smell horrible due to the duck feathers. You have to really wash them multiples times to get rid of the smell.
I completely agree. Returned a vest purchased from eb and mentioned the same concern.

I was wondering about the sew lines as well. Large baffle boxes means more room to move around? It makes sense but I guess I'll have to do some research. I have a smaller boxed ver of Eddie Bauer down at 650fill power and it's warming than my sprint/fall UNICLO light weight down.

Bought this last year at this time and have never had an issue with any odors. My wife is very sensitive to bad odors and would have not hesitated to say something if it was an issue.

I bought this last year as well and never had any odor. Unless they changed something from last year to this, I think it would be fine. If there is a smell then one would notice it in the store itself.

This is the perfect daily jacket. The "battlefield" jacket so to speak. It's not ritzy, but that's the point! You can wear a super comfy down jacket every day but you don't worry about your baby puking on your down jacket because it's only $35/$40.

Plus, this doesn't yell "outdoor!!" I tried many different lightweight down jackets but those jackets were a bit too outdoorsy as a daily default jacket for my personal taste.

I wore this jacket on like 80 days of last winter. I was anxiously waiting for this to come back. In for 3 because it comes in 3 colors.

I got these on clearance last winter for like $10 in store. They are definitely very light jackets. Probably best for fall weather.

Sams has a very similar, but non hooded version for $35. Last year, I got the hooded version from sams and a family member got the Costco version. Almost identical but my Sams version weighed 12 oz and the Costco weighed 14 oz.

Back in the day, eddie bauer was trendy among the rich preppy crowd in my school. Eddie bauer hoodies/jackets and birkenstock sandels especially. Still don't have much eddie bauer stuff currently other than some flannels I bought on clearance. Those leather sneakers that were posted in here. And I was buying their ripstop backpacks and sling bags whenever free shipping or adventure reward coupons were offered.
Yeah, I remember it was to the point that Ford use to have "Eddie Bauer" packages on their SUV's. Funny how brands lose their cache due to mismanagement. Anyways, I found their First Ascent line to be top quality, but the company hasn't been able get traction with it. You can often find First Ascent stuff for cheap on clearance. Stuff is comparable to any of the top brands found at REI.

I bought one of these on clearance a year or two ago for under $20. It didn't smell like others have mentioned. It does shed small feathers though. Decent light down jacket though, layers well other than feathers getting on things.

Well yes and no. Stitching causes cold spots where there is no insulation. I'd prefer less stitching than more within reason. I would give more consideration to the down fill number which represents the density. The down fill in this jacket is relatively low. And then on top of that the down is mixed with feathers. So not the best in terms of warmth. More a light jacket than a coat.

I bought last year's version and it has served me well as a beater jacket that I don't have to worry about. I keep it in the car. Mine didnt have any funny smells although many of the reviews said it did, even last year. The hood has no adjustments beyond the elastic. Same with the wrists. I found both adequate in keeping in warmth. The hem on mine on the other hand, doesn't have an elastic band which can allow some cold air in. One thing I would change.

All in all, it think it's great for the price. A small step up from the Gerry down jackets that's often carried along side these, but a step down from the Marmot that's in the warehouse from time to time. But then again, the Marmots are almost double the price.
