Also worth noting you get extended warranty and purchase protection when you pay with points (you don't when you pay with gift cards).

Apart from the already mentioned much high value obtained via point transfers to Hyatt or to airlines- you're also forgetting that the 1.5x portal travel bookings are treated, by the hotels and airlines, as cash bookings... which means if your airline or hotel loyalty account is attached you ALSO earn loyalty rewards with the hotels and airlines as if you paid cash for those bookings-- so you're still getting more than 1.5x value even in the portal- something not true of these Apple purchases.
