I have been looking for a budget friendly jacket for winter and came across REI Co-op Stormhenge Down Hybrid Jacket. Right now the price is $279 and I know in that past it was 50% lower. With inflation I wasn't sure if it will ever go that low and so I chatted with an agent and she mentioned that there will be a sale from Nov 10 through 20 called Gear up Get out sale and the price for this would be $195 which is $85 less than the actual MSRP. I just wanted to post this so that people who are looking to buy a good warm jacket can plan accordingly .

THIS DEAL IS NOT LIVE YET . Please be kind if I'm too early but thought it might help someone

Features:
REI-exclusive HydroWall 2-layer waterproof, breathable nylon shell with fully sealed seams provides burly weather protection
850-fill-power goose down is highly compressible and provides abundant warmth for its light weight
Down has also been treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) to help it resist water
Recycled-fiber synthetic insulation is mapped to areas of high heat and high use because it insulates when wet and dries fast
Both down and synthetic insulation is mapped to the body, providing warmth where it's needed and reduced bulk where it's not
Sleeping bag–like draft tube at neck stops heat from escaping
Bonded baffles welded to the shell trap warmth and eliminate cold spots
Insulated 3-way adjustable hood is helmet-friendly and provides protection and warmth
Hood and hem adjust easily with gloves thanks to oversize cordlocks
Pit zips and VISLON® waterproof zipper act as vents to dump core heat as needed
Seam-free shoulders won't chafe under pack straps
Adjustable cuffs seal out the elements; synthetic insulation prevents wet-out at cuffs
Internal zippered pocket, internal drop-in pocket, zippered chest and hand pockets securely stow essentials
Hand pockets are placed strategically to work with a pack's hipbelt
Made to reflect our love for people and the planet through the use of recycled and bluesign®-approved materials, and a Fair Trade Certified factory

850 goose down fill with a waterproof outer shell for that price is very good. IMO
Most down jackets are not waterproof. When down gets wet, it does not keep its loft, therefore you lose some heat.

The blue/green color is $154 only in large but that still doesn't seem like a slickdeal. Maybe under 100 I'd bite

To each their own, but I prefer to layer the correct thermals (down included) under one of my 3 shells (selected for the weather). Also, that rei hybrid jacket on the models is not attractive IMO.

It just depends on purpose. This is a really nice jacket to pick up and run out into a light sleet or cold, but not so extreme that you need to spend time layering.

It's also far too heavy to take on a cold weather backpacking trip where you'd be better off layering base, down, shell for sure.

It has a place and is very well made, but it's not all-purpose for sure.

yeah I agree. Layering is nice for any kind of remotely physical activity. Shell will keep moisture out as well as in (even with goretex and "premium" shells there's moisture being trapped) which is a downside when sweating. With layering, if there's no rain, you can get better breathability and still warmth.
For wearing around the city this is totally fine

The original was farking excellent. I put one on in the store and could instantly fill warmer. Zipped up I got uncomfortable. I instantly knew I wanted one. Just went to eBay and bought a new with tags one for about $120. Got another lightly used for my wife for about the same.

The new one is "hybrid". They are adding poyester fill insulation with the 850 down. Mine has nothing but 850 down. They claim, "synthetic insulation prevents wet-out at cuffs", so maybe that's a valid change. Personally if I'm really worried about wetting out, I'm wearing individual layers and I'm not wearing down.

As far as the original stormhenge, there's nothing close for the price. Waterproof shell, adjustable hood, adjustable wrists, adjustable hem, pit zips, lots of 850 down, a way more resilient outer fabric than a typical down puffer. It was almost flawless. The new hybrid is obviously a step down, but it's still a nice jacket. I'd want to pay less now that they are offering less.

Even though it's DWR treated shell and down, I'd not buy a down jacket if you might be in cold and wet for long periods of time. For strenuous hikes, I'd rather have synthetics that dry out easier, and it's probably too warm most of the time anyway. Really a nearly perfect casual winter jacket though. Warm, comfy, ready for rain.

Won't work. Email states it excludes bikes.
