If you don't want to spend $50 on a water filter, contact GE customer support and they will send you a free bypass plug.
You can then use the bypass plug to use your unfiltered cold fridge water or you can cut the RFID tag out of the bypass plug and tape it in the water slot. After you tape it in, you can purchase third party water filters for much cheaper (I use the Waterdrop brand). The fridge will think the bypass plug is being used, although the water will actually be filtered through the third party filter.
One tip about cutting the RFID tag out, use a Dremel or multi tool to cut the hard plastic. If you try peeling the sticker, the RFID tag will break. GE engineered the RFID tags to tear on the bypass plug and water filters if you try to remove them.
After you install the third party water filter, the fridge won't give you a reminder to change the filter, because it doesn't think a filter is being used. So leave yourself a note to change it every ~6 months.
… or install and inline filter and use the bypass plug…
I swear refrigerators are getting more and more bulbous every year. They look ridiculous in kitchens. Even some of the "counter depth" refrigerators are blatantly false before they get to the 6" thick doors.
I looked at it at Lowe's. It's actually $1399 there locally. It is made in Mexico. What else is new? At least not China, I guess. I think the Whirlpool too was made in Mexico.

Thanks for the heads up! It looks like it's $1399 online at Lowes[lowes.com] as well after taking off $100 when you spend over $800! Will update the OP
difficult to find a good and reliable fridge in the price range of $1100 to $1500. This is very good price for what you get. (I ended up playing it safe and downsized to the GE 25.3 side by side for $1100--it may also be made in Mexico, but has Kentucky written on it too.).
But of course, As with all fridges no matter the price, is it going to last over 8+ years, ideally 12 years or more?
only time will tell.

This is an excellent fridge. I bought mine two years ago from Costco, which was around 1600 at that time. Very reliable and very quiet.
The inner water dispenses it, giving out more space for other stuff. I love the design.
The only complaint is that the ice maker switch is too deep and a little bit hard to reach. But if you use ice very often, you may not have any problem.

Been made in Mexico, all of them, for two decades now.

Mostly everything is made there these days, it's about the quality control & quality parts, otherwise how'd Apple have such great success there? Although I suppose if I did have a choice I'd go with something German/Japan/USA made if I had the choice to.
I have a very similar model 5 years ago for $1350. It's pretty much the same down to the size and interior components except the is no internal water dispenser on this model.
My problems with this model? The alarm that is used to tell you your doors are open broke around year 4, and lately it's not cooling as well as before. Sometimes pulling the plug for a few minutes will reset the thermometer, but we shouldn't need to do this.
I just bought the 33" wide version of this fridge 6 months ago in Slate for about $2000 delivered and I am very happy with it. Model #GNE25JMKES . Great layout/lighting and it is extremely quiet, much nicer than my parents expensive Bosch fridge. I have a wireless thermometer and verified that it holds the temperature in the freezer and fridge very well. No door mounted ice or water for significantly better reliability and power efficiency.
