Older movies often look the best in 4K because they were recorded on film, rather than digitally. You can get much more detail out of film. Many older films are actually downscaled to 4K. Many modern movies are finished in 2K then upscaled to 4K.

Lots of great movies in this sale! Remember, if you do Sony Movie Buff Rewards, you're limited to 10 movies per month that count toward your passes. Not every movie on the list is eligible. I didn't get any points for Superbad 4K.

Thanks this was one of the better offerings for me, ended up with 9 movies, mostly comedies that rarely go on sale. Still considering 3 more which would mainly be nostalgia purchases.

Great mention, thank you!

How do we identify whether the films are through Sony Pictures Studios?

Apologies, here is the eligible list [moviesanywhere.com] for reference.

Some Sony films may qualify despite not being on the list so YMMV

Awesome, thanks!

Sorry, newbie further question:

Does that mean any one of those from the list would be free after a purchase of 5 others there?

Short answer, no. The list shows the qualifying films that will be eligible towards one of your five purchases.

Once you satisfy the requirement, you'll get a code to redeem on your Movies Anywhere account.

You will then pick one of the films after redemption

Qualifying Movies for this Quarter

(not earth shattering but can't complain for being free)
  • The Smurfs (4K)
  • The Quick and the Dead (4K)
  • Double Team (HD)
  • Love in the Afternoon (HD)
  • The Covenant (HD)
  • Closer (HD)
  • Center Stage (HD)
  • Death at a Funeral (HD)
  • The Brothers Solomon (HD)

When I see older movies available in 4k, I question how much better upscaling the original recordings could actually be. Is the difference really that great?

Older movies, and even TV shows that were shot on film, often see the biggest improvement. Not only were older scans much lower resolution, they also tend to be done using much older tech, so even at the same resolution the newer scans look better. And at 4k you can even make out the film grain (on a good quality transfer that doesn't filter it out as "noise") which can really give you that sitting in a movie theater feeling. That tends to get lost when streaming though.

The ones that see the least improvement are ones from the late 90s aland 2000s that were edited digitally and have a lot of CGI, as unless they have ALL of the assets and want to put in a ton of work, the only way to go much past blu ray quality is essentially upscaling.

35MM film is analog and can hold a ton of detail. It's not infinite like some suggest (after all, the silver nitrate crystals do have a non-zero size), but the estimate is that quality 35mm film stock that has been well-preserved can hold detail equivalent to about 6k-8k. When you see an older movie in 4K, it usually means they've gone back and done a new 4k (or higher) scan of the film to bring in all the detail that would have been missing in older scans. 4K resolution allows for film grain to be presented realistically and accurately without causing artifacts or noise. As a result, older films in 4K are some of my favorite because, for the first time, you can get the original theatrical film look in at home.

The previous answer is a bit misleading. Older, film-based movies are neither upscaled nor downscaled for 4K. That's a digital-to-digital process. Film is scanned to be converted from analog to digital, and the scan resolution determines the level of detail. They aren't "downscaled" from the maximum film resolution. There are just potential details that aren't captured. But, in reality, a good 4K scan is very close to a lossless representation of 35mm film, and you wouldn't be able to see a difference between that and a 6k/8k scan.

Now, if we're talking about IMAX film, that's a whole different story. That holds so much detail, I'm not sure digital will ever fully represent it.

Sony is one of the best studios out there with their 4k mastering releases. If your TV can do good HDR and title supports it, you're gonna see these older movies like never before.

What a rip the HD unrated versions of Superbad and Pineapple express aren't included in the 4k UHD versions.
