mine died indoors against a north facing window. Has to be kept outdoors because they rely on the temperature fluctuations of the day.

They do well inside as long as they get full sunlight most of the day during the winter months. They might look drab compared to the summer months, but they wont die and perk back up when earth tilts back towards the sun again. Smilie

Edit: Also water them less during the winter. They turn weaker and dont drink as much.

But the little fisherman will get exposure…

Correct. They should be kept outside so they can experience their normal dormant cycles. Keeping them indoor year round will kill them eventually.

Nope, also can't shipped to AZ. Suspect they won't ship to warmer weather winter states?

Actually you can as Junipers are quite cold tolerant. Just keep it out of wind and cover the pot with mulch or bubble wrap.

Will it survive outdoors in northern winters ?

I have a big ol patch of this type of juniper growing the yard and it does just fine over the winters. Granted, I'm in Seattle area where we may *only* get down to the 20's, lowest, most winters...but, still Wink

So, I'm telling myself: I can just grab a handful from the yard and put it in a pot myself for a nice lil gift like this. But I know that'll never happen Wink So I might just pick one up for a gift.

Me thinks the fisherman doesn't have a special live bait permit to fish in a garden in CA & AZ. Yes! Living CA causes a variety of diseases.

Yes, give it some extra protection once temperatures reach below 17F. Like wrap a blanket around the pot or put it inside a box.
