8gb is enough for watching videos, daily browsering, excel, word etc.
However it is not ideal for video editing, docker or simulator/emulator based software development.

Alex Ziskind has a bunch of videos testing various Macbook configurations for development work ...including android work. If I remember correctly, he was shocked with how well 8gb does in many situations. MacOs on Apple Silicon handles low memory very well in many scenarios. But extra memory does help. Here is one vid I found with a quick search:

That video isn't exactly scientific but if you're using it as justification for not needing more RAM, toward the end he says the program is using 2.5G of swap already. That's not great. Also while he is talking his screen recorder freezes.

The business I work for, half our workers are apple and the other is windows. The biggest issue we run into is 8 GB ram that the macs have. A lot of Apple users have bad habits of having everything open and multiple chrome tabs, add adobe products and microsoft office to the mix and you have some unhappy users.

If you're trying to get your feet wet into the apple ecosphere then I guess this is a good entry level mac. Just have to remember to kill your programs or quit the apps you are not working in and that's a bit difficult for users coming from the windows side. They assume that red dot equals close, but it's more of a minimize feature.

Anyway that is my two cents, I wouldn't touch an 8 gb apple, because in the long term you'll regret it and if you plan to keep the computer for a few years then do yourself a favor and pay for the extra ram.

8GB is fine until Apple wants you to buy a new laptop. I'm still using my 2012 MacBook Pro. 4-5 years ago I updated the OS and it wouldn't run Chrome with more than 4-5 tabs. I opened it up, which was doable until Apple became crap, and updated to 16gb. Still runs great.

I use an 8 gig M1 to mess around with .NET Maui and XCode as a break from web dev (on the employer's laptop), and 8 & 256 is not enough.

If you stuck to XCode and just run apps "on my Mac (iPhone compatible)" you'll have much better performance. That's just bearable.

But as another poster said, if you've got an IDE, emulator, and browser with more than a few windows open, 8 gigs craps out noticeably. You have to pick two if you appreciate speed. (Again this is why I tend to run on "my Mac" rather than an emu for as long as possible.)

256 is too small when you start using it for multiple emulators (Android, iOS, watchOS (several gigs!)) and anything else. You will not have photos, a Steam library, IDEs, node apps, multiple emus, and several projects on your box. Pick a single use and you'll be happier, but not happy, if only b/c you'll only be doing one thing on a box almost capable of doing so many…

YMMV, of course. The processors are amazing, esp if you're coming from Intel.

This is one of the reasons I don't like Apple. In many ways the hardware is so good but I can't help but feeling like they know they can cheat me on the price of what is typically a commodity item (RAM, HD). Consider that I just bought a 2T WD black SSD for around $100. Apple wants $200 for a paltry upgrade from .25T to .5T.

My wife has been a Mac user for a while and I appreciate that the previous Macs really held up. Her current Mac is 10 years old. However, more memory/HD are two things that can really extend the life of a computer and those are two things Apple locks you out of. It makes it really hard for me to willingly hand over so much cash for a system that is already gimped at time of purchase. Yes, you can get soldered Windows machines. In fact I have an HP "Surface" with such limitations. But when it was released in 2017 8gb, 256gb were more impressive and for the same money I could have decided to go for a different laptop with more upgradability for the same money. When you add it Apple's decidedly unfriendly right to repair efforts it's just so much harder to want to buy a current Apple computer even though I like so much about them (great track pad, very good screens, decent keyboards on the latest models, very good battery life).
