For anyone who is curious what this device is used for...
One main option and huge benefit is when you're traveling and using hotel Wifi this device will set up its own wifi network that runs a VPN on the unit itself and all traffic funneled thru this device will be thru the VPN. so you only need to connect to the hotel wifi, accept the terms and conditions, turn on the VPN, and now all your devices are tunneled thru the VPN. so you don't need to set up your VPN on every device.

one example of my main use is that when we travel, I bring my chromecast and Amazon echo dot. because I set it up before we leave. When I turn it on and get connected, all my devices connect automatically and funneled thru the VPN. I'm able to stream my own shows thru the chromecast, and I can set timers, alarms, play audiobooks, music, etc, thru the echo dot.

I power it thru a USB charging block with 5 ports and charge all my devices over night and power this unit. but you can also power it thru a portable battery, which is one benefit of using this device over the newer ones. if you like you can also bring along a battery operated Wyze cam and use it to monitor the hotel room when your gone.

It's got VPN software to pair with your VPN service. It doesn't have a VPN itself.

I got this in 2020 for $20 new on Amazon. Is this good now with all the other newer Gli Net routers? I think it's very slow dated for vpn etc right ?

Yes. There's also an official app but you can just open the standard admin page with your phone web browser, absolutely.
Do you have to connect this device thru cable/wire to your phone to access the page?

I think we need speed test from people who owns it. The encryption process demands CPU power.

Yes you can. But being anonymous, that is a different story.

You could. But it's not very powerful and thru-put speeds aren't that high. It's meant as a travel router more than a dedicated home router. If your looking at using it as a VPN for home I'd recommend something else. As for those options I don't really know much about that. I want to say maybe look at a raspberry pi???

apparently it's able to identify jerkfaces, so there's that.
Yea, my comment wasn't meant to be snippy to any one person. You may have read it that way but I honestly was asking what the benefit was based on the idea that my laptop can do the same thing.
Another person was kind enough to explain the difference and I thanked them.
I'm sorry if I came off as being a jerk. That actually wasn't my intention at all.

I own another portable router from them. I want to pick up a second one to try to create a device based "tunnel" vpn network where only my two portable routers are on it and can be used to tunnel into my home LAN. Would this be possible? If so can anyone recommend how I might learn to do it or point me in the right direction?
You can use something like Brume 2 to set up the wireguard server and Beryl AX for the client. All the traffic will be routed through the Brume 2 with your home IP. You only need to (1) set up the ISP modem/router in passthrough mode and let Brume act as a gateway/router for your home, or (2) forward the winguard server port to Brume specifically for the vpn tunnel.
Gl-inet is great since they're already set up with everything you need and they're easy to set up.

Just pick one with a decent SoC. Mango is on the low end of the scale and might now have enough juice to handle the vpn encryption at a reasonable speed.

Do keep in mind the latency over vpn is significantly higher, double/triple digit in milliseconds since you have additional hops. Throughput, not so much as long as the device and connection are fast enough.

Will this allow me to appear to be home in my US location while abroad? I have a job that reveals my IP address and I am not allowed to work from outside the US. Need to use both the phone and laptop but not sure if this will do it. Thanks in advance.
Just use Tailscale. Set up a computer at home as an exit node, then install the app on your phone and laptop. Connect, select your home computer as your exit node, then verify that your IP is now showing up as the one at home. Done.

You're likely thinking about a VPN in the sense that you might use one to mask your Internet activity for safety. Something you buy a subscription for and see lots of ads on YouTube for and what.

The others are mostly talking about an appliance you leave on your home network while you're not home that then allows you to create your own VPN and connect to your home network, devices on your home network, or accessing the Internet as if you were at home with your home IP.

VPN stands for virtual private network. Lots of uses and lots of different ways to think of them depending on the use case.

edit: and this thing likely uses like 2-5W of power power even at full boar. the laptop even with the screen shut is probably more like 30-40W left running. This just stays running all the time, is always ready to go, etc.
Regarding this point you made about "connecting to your home network" while abroad - are you saying that this Portable Wireless VPN Router has the ability to do that? And if my employer has software to detect whether I'm working from my home city or not, could this tool be used to "fool" the software into thinking I'm working from home, despite being in another city?
