I've been eyeing Root but that bgg complexity was a lot higher than I had anticipated, sitting at 3.78. Compare that to other games like wingspan (2.46), scythe (3.44), Gloomhaven JOTL (3.63), everdell (2.81), catan (2.44).

I'm worried teaching the game will be difficult and there would be a huge learning curve. Anyone with experience on how this game fares with their groups? Suitable to play with kids 10+? My nephews could just barely hold their patience for JOTL and got through a few stories before needing a break.

Hey there - I just used this deal to get Pandemic Legacy. I put 3 copies of Pandemic Legacy in my cart, then (be sure to follow instructions from OP) for steps 3 and 4, cancel 2 copies. You should just do the same, 3 copies of Everdell. easy peasy.

NOTE: The Target web GUI is vague at the cancel step, I couldn't tell if I was choosing the number to KEEP in my order, or if I was choosing the number to CANCEL. The answer was to choose "2" to cancel 2 of them. Hopefully that helps someone else out.

So my wife and I are pretty big board gamers and her favorite games are Ark Nova and The Great Western Trail.

She hated root. We also tried it with our gaming group and it just didn't click. So we sold it (and I was an original KS backer too).

For anyone looking at other games, Everdell is a great hit with my wife and our gaming roup. My 5 year old also loves ticket to ride. He learned on Ticket to Ride Europe, then we did Ticket to Ride New York, and then recently Ticket to Ride Ghost train. Ghost train is his favorite because of the theme.

He also loves Carcassonne too. We play base game and also Inns & Cathedrals with the 5 year old.

Thanks. The process worked as described. We'll see if it ships okay.

Math:
25% off = 3/4
B2G1F = 2/3
(2/3)*(3/4) = 2/4 = 1/2

Awesome price for all these games. Twilight Imperium, if you've been eyeing it, is a steal at this price.

It's all down to personal preference but I played about 6 games of Root and found it to be way over hyped and basically awful. The mechanics are there but it's just not Fun - a weird combination of fiddly complex rules and simple goals turns it into work.

If you enjoy tableau building and worker placement you'll enjoy it. The art of the game is amazing.

There's no comparison with Gloomhaven. Root has its rules, but it moves pretty quickly, even with new players.

The only thing is not everyone will see the strategies for winning because each faction in the game plays very differently than the other. It might help to have an experienced player that's familiar with how the factions work before introducing it to kids.

Root is an amazing game. One of my board game groups top three played games. That being said, it is rather complex and hard to teach. The basic rules themselves aren't that bad. It's the fact that it is incredibly asymmetric and each faction is like learning it's own game. So not only do you have to know your faction, but you have to learn how each other faction plays. Especially if you have to teach it. I think 10+ could get into this a little better than JotL only because Jaws is very calculated and lots of little rules to remember. Root, if you can have the kids hammer down one of the less complex factions I think it'll be more engaging. But every person is different so hard to say

I loved this game.. yes, it is complicated but the rule book is good. The asymmetrical aspect of the game is fantastic. I wish we played it more.
