Bam! Got one.....good specs for 370 bucks, only thing missing is a backlit keyboard, but I can live without it.

Unfortunately, it seems that if it's under $400, no backlit keyboard. That's often the case with ones above $400, too. The op did a good job by actually mentioning this; most deal posts don't. I won't buy without backlit, either.

Why do SDers care so much about backlit keyboards on their laptops? Can you not type without looking? Serious question, thought I'd ask now and get it over with if I'm being the dumb one.

The price isn't impressing me but the specs look good.

You have listed "1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port with DisplayPort 1.4" as one of the ports, but this is only available with laptops with an aluminum chassis or with an Nvidia graphics card....this laptop has neither. I am not a techie, but does this mean only one external monitor can be used (since it has only one HDMI port and no USB Type C port)?

The RAM and storage are getting much cheaper. Last month, I upgraded most of my old laptops with 32G RAM ($50) and 1T ssd ($35). My former co-worker taught me to always buy Dell PC with minimum RAM and hard drive storage and then you can use the saving to get larger RAM and bigger storage in 6 months or 1 year. I found out this is true.
Agree with you that it's often cheaper to upgrade RAM and SSD ourselves. However from the Dell website, there's no way to get minimum RAM and SSD with the i5 processor setup.

I would hazard a bet that most people banging away on laptops are not touch typists. I never learned myself.

This unit does not have a USB-C port or a backlit keyboard.

On this model I dont seee the price dropping further, but the cashback sites raise their rates leading into Cyber Monday so you can squeeze in further savings

I've taken advantage of this in the past (with some hickups) but got my 16% back after a few months but was $222.xx on almost a $1400 purchase.

LOL, that's funny. My KPM is over 20,000. But for my personal laptop, a lot of the time it's not on my lap or on a desk ready for me to type. I might just reach over and need to hit a button or type something. And between computer manufacturers not using true white letters any more, and the many different layouts on keyboards, I don't want to have to adjust to figure out which button is FN, or prt scrn, or period.

I have 8 computers/laptops here right now and only two have the same layout because they're identical make/model. So trying to hit delete on one when it's the same place as the power button on another can be annoying/frustrating (to say the least). And I won't even get into all the random icons now being used instead of a word. I also consider the need for backlit because of low light situations especially when coupled with aging eyes.

Find a good deal now and jump on it; I wouldn't bother waiting for Black Friday in hopes that there's some better deal (that you can't buy 'cause it sold out its limited quantities).

Heck, go with this laptop with the i3 CPU (and less ram/ssd and integrated graphics) for $247 if you want to save as much as you can. I kinda think that's the better deal for anyone wanting a laptop for general browsing, youtube, office work, etc. It's easy to add another 8GB sodimm for ~$16 to bump that system to 16GB RAM in the future (which you might never feel the need to depending on how you're using the laptop). If that laptop were advertised on Best Buy as a Black Friday special, I think it would sell like hotcakes.

fwiw, I'm a cheap programmer and our house bought both this i5 laptop (for adult son who just needs a replacement laptop) and the i3 laptop (for aunt who only uses a web browser for her computing).

I almost ordered the similar 3520 i3 1215u with 8G RAM , 256G ssd for $246 plus tax , minus $40$ (shop at dell with AE, $40 rebate for $200 purchase ) However, I am trying to see the extra $90 for i5 is worth it.
Isn't the difference more like $123? If you're just in need of a cheap laptop to do web browsing, youtube, netflix, and word/excel then it's not worth that price difference. There's actually not a huge difference in performance between the i5-1235U and i3-1215U (likely unnoticeable in standards tasks) and you can upgrade to 16GB of RAM with another ~$16 8GB sodimm stick if/when needed.

Is this an IPS panel? I assume it's not since I don't see it advertised.

Edit: looks like it's WVA

The reasons why are probably different for everyone. I'm a vampire, often have low-light settings at home. Yes, I touch type, but look down to orient my fingers on the keyboard when I start sometimes. Plus, I'm often not typing away like I am now, I'm scrolling through and maybe need to hit a key now and then, or turn the volume up or down (and I have a laptop and chromebook, with the volume buttons on opposite sides of the keyboard on each - I always have to look to see which side it is on the device I'm using). Those of us who like a backlit keyboard really like it, and it's typically a dealbreaker without it. If you don't care, you're lucky, because the cheapest deals never have one.

Having both types of keyboards on laptops here at my home, and being a proficient touch typist for 30+ years, laptop keyboards generally have odd spacing or different key positions vs. desktop keyboards. It helps when working at night, sitting on the couch, to have a backlit keyboard for frequent re-orientation just like pippypoppy mentioned.
