Unfortunately, it seems that if it's under $400, no backlit keyboard. That's often the case with ones above $400, too. The op did a good job by actually mentioning this; most deal posts don't. I won't buy without backlit, either.

I keep all my laptops regarding of age. My oldest laptop is a Sony Vaio (Year 1999) running Windows 2000. And the second oldest is Toshiba (Year 2009) which just died with CMOS battery. The rest of old laptops are fully functional, ranging from Year 2010 to Year 2021.
I found out about Linux on laptop and I installed Ubuntu on all of my old laptops. That's why they are still working.

By the way, I am testing Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 this week. It comes i3 1215 cpu with 8G RAM and 128G storage. The RAM takes up 5.6G just by starting the chromebook and runining chrome browsers. Even Chomebook demands more than 4G of RAM.
It is the high requirements of OS that drive people to replace the laptop more often.
That's true, the OS pushes upgrades of HW. It's nice that you've kept your old equipment. I've done the same. I have a Commodore 64 my uncle bought me when I was 9 and my oldest laptop is a Micron with Windows 98. I've turned part of a spare bedroom into a sort of tech museum. I appreciate others who keep old tech too. It's also good for nostalgia.

It's weird that there are tons of reviews from a few hours ago and just a day ago. I wouldn't trust the reviews.

I almost ordered the similar 3520 i3 1215u with 8G RAM , 256G ssd for $246 plus tax , minus $40$ (shop at dell with AE, $40 rebate for $200 purchase ) However, I am trying to see the extra $90 for i5 is worth it.

See below for the i3 configuration and price.
You can create a new yahoo email account to get the 10% code, but the expiration date is still fixed on Nov 20. I created one and saw it.
Perhaps Dell set a fixed date on batches of the 10% code.

I will never buy i3 and 8 gb ram. Both don't do a great job even for basic use with multiple browser open. I use an i3 8 gig for my online class and if I open a internet browser to search any material the cpu and memory hits its max

The RAM and storage are getting much cheaper. Last month, I upgraded most of my old laptops with 32G RAM ($50) and 1T ssd ($35). My former co-worker taught me to always buy Dell PC with minimum RAM and hard drive storage and then you can use the saving to get larger RAM and bigger storage in 6 months or 1 year. I found out this is true.
Careful some of the laptop comes with inbuilt memory with no slots. In that case the upgrade option won't work

... most newer laptops have soldered RAM, and no upgrade path, that used to be the case but no longer.

USB C charging probably not there. Some Dell Insp 3520 don't even have USB C port.
UBB C port only applied to 3520 certain models.

From the specs by Dell, there are two configurations of the USB ports.

1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 port (on systems configured with Type-C®)
2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports (on systems configured with non Type-C®)
In this day and age I personally couldn't get a laptop without displayport over USB-C or Power Delivery. One, charging is ubiquitous. Two, it's nice to have the option to be able to plug into a "work setup" with external monitors, mouse and keyboards to get some productive work done, like on a Saturday morning to pay bills, or whatever.

Always a risk with the Inspiron, consumer based laptops. Which is why I'd recommend finding an equivalent Latitude from the Dell refurb store. One can snag a pretty good deal with the occasional 50% off coupons and such.

If you want a laptop with low price, backlit keyboard, touch screen, USB C port with power, and expansion of memory, you can consider refurbished Dell Latitude. I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude for $220 in August. (Within 30 days, the price of the exact model dropped to $180).
But then there are risks with refurbished laptop.
My refurbished laptop has USB connection issue. In addition, recently after I upgraded the hard drive to 1T ssd, I often get blue screen error in Window. The solution is to restart and hope it won't trigger another blue screen.
A $220 laptop ($52 more for 32G RAM; $35 more for 1T ssd) with backlit keyboard, touch screen, USB C port with power, and expansion of memory is too good to be true, because it might come with occasional blue screen.
I have not had time to figure out the exact cause. Maybe some outdated driver.

The configuration with 8GB was just under $300 last month with the same codes.

I would try a better SSD 512. Some of intel ssd suck in Intel 8th and 10th Gen .

If the refurb dell was going perfectly stock, but BSOD with aftermarket parts.
it mean the motherbroad is super picky
