Taipei is an awesome city full of friendly people who happen to love Americans. English is common, but don't expect everyone to be fluent.

Make sure you visit the night markets. If consumerism is your thing (this is Slickdeals, right?) Taiwan has some of the cheapest shopping in the world.

It's not quite Tokyo when it comes to Michelin stars, but there's amazing food at great value.

IMO, this is the best time of year to visit this subtropical island.

AFAIK the only direct flight United has to TPE is from SFO so likely through there.

I've been watching LAX > TPE prices for the better part of 6 months now, planning for an event in March of 2024.

The $870 pricing has been this way for quite some time.

for slightly more ($900-950) you can fly direct via EVA/China/Starlux from LAX to TPE with 2 checked luggage and slightly more legroom in economy. UAL flies the 777-200/300ER on this route and the seats (3-4-3) are pretty small.

Edit: the lack of seat selection is a pretty common thing for routes direct to Taiwan. Taiwanese carriers (EVA/China/Starlux) all offer 2 pieces checked bags but no seat selection as a standard offering.

"Basic Economy" for US carriers essentially matches this but also drops the baggage allowance to 1 instead of 2 pieces.
