I don't need to pay anyone for assembly, bikes are pretty basic and I have built/repaired/assembled a bunch. Built custom Harleys for 30 years along with being a car mechanic during that time so bicycles are very primitive lol.

Just a heads up, klarna payment is bugged on their site and gets canceled transaction. At least this happened yesterday but regular payment went through and it shipped next day FedEx ground.

For about the same amount of money (assuming no parts are needed) The Specialized are going to be much nicer bikes, last longer, stay in tune in better, and have better resale value - but do they fit you?

Don't forget the assembly and adjustment costs of any direct to consumer bike, which could be $100-$150, unless you know how or are willing to learn to do it yourself.

@Vseven not an expert, but I have cleaned up quite a few bikes. Often a tune-up at a local shop will cost $50-$75, covering the basics. If it were me, with limited time, I would wipe down the specialized bikes with a towel, and rub some of the surface rust with aluminum foil and water (light rust comes off pretty easily with this technique), and take them to the bike shop for a tune-up. Probably the 2012 Specialized has higher end components and will continue performing another 20 years, if structurally sound. You could also ask the shop, though — ask them if a tune-up will be sufficient to have you up and running. On the cheap end, things like chains ($10-$15), tubes ($5), and tires ($20-$40) might put you at higher initial cost, but still good long term value. Comparable bike type is specialized Sirrus, which is a really solid option (I would definitely fix one up), and closer to $600-$800 in modern prices.

Consider a mail order bike may also need a tune-up or help with assembly, depending on your experience, which could push pricing closer.

Check Groupon, sometimes local bike shops have deals on tune ups. The real issue is if something needs to be fixed or repaired, that can get $$$$

But if you can find a deal on a tuneup, it might be worth it.

Is it possible to attach a rear cargo rack to this bike? I don't see the spot to screw into that I see on my bike with this bike. There is what appears to be an opening for a screw but not sure if that is what it is intended for. Also have no clue what the other side of the bike looks like since there are no pictures of it to determine if there is a spot to screw into on that side.

What's shown in your picture is the screw that holds the derailleur hanger to the frame. Don't mess with that.

For mounting a rack, you would use one of the holes that the derailleur bash guard is currently using and there should be a matching one on the other side. Though it looks like you might have to get creative up at the top as those mounting holes and the brakes may interfere with each other. https://m.media-amazon.com/images...L1500_.jpg

As Jeff said, the bash guard mount holes will work for the bottom and there are threaded inserts on the frame by the seat for the top.

Thanks to all of you. I think I'll clean up the bikes we have. Neither are in bad shape, no scratches or dings. I can tell one of the wheels is a little out of true but that can be adjusted. And the surface rust is on things like the seat poll, nothing on the body itself. They were originally my sister and BIL's bikes but they moved and couldn't take them, they are about the same height as my wife and I and they used them for a while so sizing should be ok.

There are a couple bike shops locally....I'll keep my eye out for a winter tuneup special. One that's local has a $140 tune up that looks like it would cover everything I need (complete wheel truing, replace brake & gear cables, adjust gear/derailleur, etc). Weird spending $140 on a 11 year old bike instead of on a brand new one but you guys are right that the Specialized bikes are probably built a little better and it's probably worth it.

Is it really that hard to assemble? What do you need to do? Maybe put on some wheels, seat post and handle bars. ...adjust some brakes?
