I think it will be $20 cheaper, in about 7 years.

Right and that's fine, but it pops up a warning about it all the time instead of just managing it in the background.
something is going on with yours. I do everything I need, including running parallels 19 using 8gb ram, and 4 cores. and I still dont hit max. check your services and seeing what utilizing your info

something is eating your ram up. shouldn't be running in background I guess. go to general/ and look up startup items. see what is starting as well upon login

I don't understand why it is so difficult to put the amount of RAM into the description of the deal. It's so annoying to often have to check the deal to dig and find the RAM/SSD amounts. Just always put them in the title, please please please.

its using memory as cache. it doesn't want free up memory, it uses all it can to the max pretty much.
More memory would still be welcome. It slows down to a crawl when it swaps. 16 just wasn't enough for me.

That said, I'm still very happy with mine. I just have to be a little more mindful about system resources.

I know what's eating up my ram. It's the 3d models I'm working on. Sometimes with a YouTube video and discord.

The main issue is the lack of true atom support. There just isn't any great modeling programs out there for it. So the system struggles.

You have 60 days within the purchase date to decide whether to buy AppleCare+.
Here's my 2 cents. I bought the base model of this laptop from Woot in late April. It was a sealed Apple refurb in the plain white box.

I kept the laptop at home at my desk. No food or drinks around. 2 months later the keys randomly typed by themselves. It was bad enough that I sometimes couldn't type in my login password.

I brought it to the Apple Store, showed them the video I recorded and they sent it off to have the top case replaced. I picked it up 2 days later. It's been 4 months and no issues since then. Luckily this was covered by the regular 1-year AppleCare warranty.

If you regularly travel with it or bring it to cafes where there's liquids around I think AppleCare+ gives you peace of mind.

Here's how I rationalized the price. The 3-year AppleCare+ plan for this model is $279. $30 cheaper if you're a student. The cost Apple charges to replace the battery on this 14" model is $249. If the battery health drops below 80% within the 3-year coverage period Apple will replace the battery for free.
Fanboys will rationalize anything.

You're right I generally like Apple stuff. Yes they're expensive and there's QA issues once in a while but in my experience their devices tend to last and their warranty service is solid.

My 2013 Air that I used to learn web development still gets security updates and works pretty well for being 10 years old. My 5 year old iPhone XS is just starting to show a little slowdown but can easily last another year.

MBP 14" M1 Pro is the best laptop that I've ever used. Great screen, bright, long battery life, fingerprint scanner and fast af. This deal is a steal. I paid $1500 for mine and it only had 512 gb!
It would be helpful to add GPU general metrics into this because that is one of the biggest differences within the family, and also external monitor support as many people do not know the limitations depending upon within the family/generation. When I bought my m1pro macbook I did not fully understand the 2 monitor limit, and I needed three. So I tried gimped displaylink solutions w/ 4k (lets just say it stunk) and then had to get an m2 pro mini to support my workflow which supports 3 monitors. Perhaps that can save a person... because I would have been better getting a max macbook and save $$$ overall.

For comparison, Windows XP was supported from 2001 till 2014. A desktop I built in 2010, still being used by my kid today, running Windows 10.
Yes, you can claim the superior product updates for iPhones because Apple is the only supplier of hardware and software in iPhone echosystem where android can be made by anybody. Without Android, this world would still use Nokia feature phones.

guess this deal is coming up again

debating this still, between a $2199 (apple edu pricing) for an M3 Pro with same tier specs (M3 Pro 12C 18GB/1TB), but it is $800 more
Mathematically is 60% more cost better than the supposed 20% more CPU speed and do you need such speed for your job or is it a luxury?

Of course its new, but this is a life lesson--maybe take that $800 and invest it instead and in 20 years if becomes multiple thousands for your retirement. If you have a Roth IRA even better.

I have multiple Apple devices but the Apple of 10 years ago is much different than 2024. Ten years ago you could repair and upgrade storage/RAM and the parts were not serialized or encrypted for third party or self repair.

Today they are all pieces of e-waste (even PC which don't have the supposed space constraints) and if anything goes wrong (esp the undersized soldiered serialized SSD) the repair cost is enormous because it's a module swap not fix the small issue.

Here's hoping the EU laws cause Apple and others to begin making e-waste modular again so the lifecycle can increase to 10 years without the cost of repair exceeding the scrap value.
