I will never understand the need to be upset about the choices that other people make. It's like people getting mad that someone uses iPhone (or Android). It does not affect your life, just let it go.
If neither of you are bothered, I suggest simply thinking "Ah, this deal is not for me, as I don't want to rent an EV" and then moving on. I would never, for instance, click on a LuLuLemon deal and say "I would never wear that." It's fine that it's not for me, and I hope other people enjoy the deal.

As for this deal, you're essentially getting 50% off for renting two days. 50% off seemed like a good enough deal to me to consider getting one on my next rental.
It can be more convenient if the place you're staying at has a place to charge. No need to stop by a gas station and waste 5-10 minutes. A typical 120v outlet is usually good enough. EVs are great if you're staying within a region.

If your planning a long road trip with more than 500 miles a day, then I prefer a gas car.

What's the penalty if you return the car with "less than a full tank"?

Just needs to be returned with at least 80% battery. Stop by a Tesla supercharger if you need to before dropping it off. Hertz just passes the supercharger fees to you without any addon.

Otherwise, the fee I believe is $35

when you say stop by a supercharger, if this is my first time with telsa, do i need some sort of account or anything to setup ahead of time?

Every Hertz EV is compatible with the Tesla Supercharger?

The Hertz Tesla have an account. Hertz just passes the fee onto you.

Just the Hertz Teslas which is most of their EV fleet. Otherwise you'll need to find another charging station for now

Who want's to worry about charging when renting? You have to be pretty committed.

It is their inconvenience if they choose this direction. On the bright side, they will get a rush out of thinking they are making a positive difference.

No one is upset at their choices, the commenter was just pointing out that most people who rent a car are on vacation or at a place away from home and they are probably not interested in renting an EV. Hertz made a real stupid move in buying these EV's in the first place - not only did they cost Hertz more than a regular car, but now they have to charge less for them because they are desperate to get people to rent them.

Higher end rental companies (Avis or Hertz - as opposed to Dollar or Thrifty) make most of their money off business travelers. Teslas work just fine for someone who flies in for a day of meetings.

As for leisure rentals, people who own EVs prefer to rent EVs (you have no idea how annoying driving a gas car is until you've lived without it for a while). As the EV ownership grows, Hertz's decision will make more and more sense. They may have gone too hard, too fast, but overall it's the right direction.
