That being said, this is my most favorite power tool and I highly recommend it. So smooth and comparatively quite quiet, it's just a pleasure to use.

Hydraulic refers to the impact mechanism. Instead of a hammer and anvil, it uses expansion/contraction of some oil. It's supposed to be quieter and the impulse is a little different.

While the peak torque is less than a traditional impact driver, the overall work done is about the same. And again it's significantly quieter than an impact driver. Also feels a lot smoother to use. Less vibration back into your hand.

It's definitely worth it for me if I don't have to keep wearing hearing protection. There was a review where someone did a decibel comparison and it was noticeably quieter.
If you don't mind the loudness of the impact driver. It's probably not really worth it.
With that being said, everybody loves the surge.
