Urban legend, and not the good kind, unless you throw them in a fire.
I have used both brands of batteries for decades, never an explosion. Enegizer [energizer.com] will replace any device damaged by leakage. Great price, I bought it and repped, thanks!

Great deal if you want batteries that explode inside your devices and destroy them.

Both Duracell and Energizer do this more than any other battery, by FAR.
Urban legend, and not the good kind, unless you throw them in a fire. Mad

I stopped by this brand off Amazon I always end up getting fakes and they hold less charge than when you buy them from Walmart.

I remember many years ago a rayovac charger nuked my rayovac batteries, and when I called them about it they sent me a new top-of-the-line charger and a bunch of batteries. Yea their customer service is pretty good if you need it lol.

It's definitely one of those weird cases where you'll probably get taken care of if you call them about it. But I say that, having thrown out something that got ruined by a leaky duracell battery. laugh out loud

Edit: I did have several energizer max AAs sitting on my table for a few weeks and one day one of the batteries made a mess of acid on the table. My only guess is it got accidentally shorted out by something being placed too close at some point lol. I learned my lesson and stopped leaving them laying around like that. So yea technically I've had that happen with energizers before, too.

I've gotten so many fake and/or bad quality batteries off of Amazon I simply shake my head every time I see one of these deals posted. I'm heavily invested in rechargeables but our wireless smoke detectors, AFTV remotes, car keyfobs and a few other devices demand the disposables. The CR123As and CR2032s are the most common counterfeits and/or quality issues I've experienced followed by AA/AAA. We pretty much source disposables from Costco or Sam's Club.

Same my blood glucose monitor uses 2032 and some attachments I have require special batteries - all of them are pretty much a nightmare. At this point, I just buy them as needed pretty much from dollar tree.

I got a batch of 2032s for my car's key fob. Replaced the battery several times but it continued to act up, got to the point I thought something was wrong with the fob or the car. I mentioned it when I dropped it off for service recently; they looked into it and said the battery was "faulty." Gave me a new battery and it's been trouble-free since.
No more Amazon batteries for me.

I've read in several places that the third party stuff gets mixed in with the "sold & shipped by Amazon" stuff all the time.
