Yup that's right. If you only play docked than go with a pro controller. If you play on the go this thing is sooooo much better than the joycons.

It seems like these cannot be used detached due to no internal battery?

I have the original split pad pro, and bought the gengar version of these split pad compact. The Compact is a nice middle ground between the joycons having terrible sticks and the split pad pro being very comfy but too wide. These are perfect. For $30 to get the red ones I think is very slick. Be warned that they do not fit in the usual switch cases due to being too wide.

You must not have large hands then. I have the original hori control the bigger one and i really like that one because its comfortable. Decided to get these on amazon and these are just as uncomfortable as the joycons on the switch. Holding these makes my hands cramp up after 30 minutes. Luckily i was able to return them to amazon.
Eh large to me isn't always large to everyone. And my hands are pretty spindly, that maybe helps

Picked up one in June for my grandson at Walmart on clearance for $25. It's all he uses now. He really likes it.

Sick!! Now I'm hoping the switch OLED goes on sale and its a wrap!!! Lets goo!!! First switch system Big Grin
It won't, sadly. Nintendo knows they'll sell systems regardless of price. The most you'll get is a bundle or gift card. You might have luck checking Facebook Marketplace for a cheap one though.

There has been a couple sales. Monoprice had them for $50 off a couple months ago.

these are great, i bought the "milky white" variant from amazon japan which comes with the middle connector to play them docked (wired) for $70 so this is a really good deal for just the controllers.

How common is playing on the go using the stand? I just got my Switch two months ago and I have yet to use it undocked, but I'm guessing that's generally the best way to use it is holding it in your hands? Especially on the go? Thanks so much.

Does anyone know of ones like these but with vibration? I know they're not official or anything.

Generally you just hold it, or if you're lounging on the couch with your feet up, you can rest it on your thighs. That's how I use my Switch Lite. But the OLED has a much more stable and beefy stand, and some people stand it on a table while holding it too, which is good because the larger screen weighs more. Lenovo Legion Go is like this too.

These are fantastic controllers if you don't mind lack of rumble and gyro. There's no battery to charge, they feel extremely comfortable, have full size control sticks, large buttons, rear buttons to assign to any button, and they fit in the dock.

Recommend these for platformers or other games that heavily used the d pad.
Got these when BN Legacy collection released and haven't had any issues.

These any good for half-circle and quarter-circle motions? I'm trying to find something, anything that will let me play Street Fighter, et al comfortably.

They work and feel a lot better than the standard joycons that's for sure. I own the yellow and white compact version of this as well as the bigger Pokémon Pro version. The dpads on both of mine work well enough, but hitting diagonals requires just a bit firmer press. Personally, I use the single Hori dpad controller for street fighter. I've had no issues with diagonals at all.

I'd recommend getting one as well as the split pad and deciding which you prefer more.

These are nice to use if you position your hand in a cupping form. Rather than a gripping form. I found the analog sticks to be a bit high. You cannot wake up the Switch using the buttons and must use the power button. You also cannot assign a button from another controller to the opposite controllers back button. Otherwise it's a good controller.
