If you didn't use the 10% off tech target circle coupon, you can use it on the watch which they dropped $100 already. So it should be around $230 with tax ($233 for NY)

Normal is $349, Garmin dropped it a few days ago and all retailers followed suit.

Garmin makes a LOT of fitness watches and there is certainly some overlap.
I run a couple times a week, swim once a week, and bike once a week. The Vivoactive works fine for me. And you can get a Vivoactive 4 for about $200 if you look for a deal now that the Vivoactive 5 is out.

The Forerunner has more stats and programs and a better GPS receiver.

There are many websites that compare the different models. This is an older model with the MIP display New models have an AMOLED display that have more "pop" but actually doesn't work as well in direct sunlight.

If this is your 1st fitness watch, I'd definitely go cheap and you can upgrade later if you find you are really into all the bells and whistles. You can get a Forerunner 55 for $170 right now, and I'd guess cheaper as Black Friday hits

And the AMOLED is great for maps (brighter and much better DPI) … but the 255/265 do not do maps. You need the 955/965 or Fenix/Epix for maps.

While it doesn't have maps, it does have breadcrumb routing which is a turn by turn system that you preplot out. Works well in urban areas where you don't need really need a Google map replication but want to create your own mileage loops.

I went from the 255 to the 965 and the display is a huge upgrade and easily readable in direct sunlight

I'm glad that you're happy, but a 965 is around $600 and a 255 is around $250.
I would not suggest anyone drop $600 on their first fitness watch.

I didn't, you said the amoled display didn't work well in direct sunlight and that has not been my experience in moving from mip to amoled

Target has return window will January 2024. Better to grab it now and return it if something better comes along because they might sell out.
