I Thought the non-AE version was great when went top $60 for like 1 hour. But I just got this AE (Acoustic Electric), due to FedEx issues instead. And here this thing is only $15 more than the non-AE version! A no brain-er.
No, I do not work for Monoprice. I've bought like 3 things from them. Including a better Wish purchase coupon deal that sent from same Monoprice.
The tone on this thing is glorious! The not just real spruce; but SOLID real spruce top does it's tonal thing. Basically it's Bass, Mids and Treble are awesome and as if plugged in. And that's before you plug into an amp; such as for recording. Not only did I get the preferred small clip on tuner; that I use for my StratBay; but it has it's own (one press) built in tuner with the EQ controls, including a presence (Tweaks output highs) slider, as well. In goes from blue to green and as if centering a needle graphic. It could not be easier. And has other tune modes. But around the other side of the guitar, where it plugs in, there is an easy access (by one pull clip) 9V battery compartment. Remove the clear plastic from the new battery inside and you're in business. Battery slides into obvious small and large terminal slots, so it's easy to get it right in a snap. Just well thought out.
There is not a scratch, blemish or odd fitting on anything, anywhere on mine. And it was very well packed and also in it;s nice thick case. Even the box was more sturdy that my StratBay guitar, in it's smaller, thinner box. The shipping box wasn't even marked up; as is typical after shipping.
The Spruce, finer wood grain is really nice. And the back and sides with their nice pattern too. Matching the neck shade and darker than I was worried, might be too light. It's a stunning look and glossy. Particularly surprising is the back of the nicely grained neck has subtle tiger stripes type of grain. Luck? I don't know; but that's usually some high dollar stuff right there. And the piping all around is really fancy. The neck cap where it meets the body is perfect and well done, also looking fancy.
The tuners are smooth and in no time (FUN to play) I had the strings stretched-in and the tuning stabilized.
The fret board and nut are really nice and again fancy. I had ZERO issue playing comfortably; but I will tell you... Upon rubbing really hard on the fret ends (not noticed while playing it a lot) then they are not yet as smooth as I've made my StratBay. My theory is it's a personal preference and you can do them to your custom preference this way. All you need to do is watch a good howto video, or take it in for a once over; if you'd rather pay. But again it's fine as is. Needing nothing technically.
That action was good if not acceptable for higher notes than the 12th fret. Again my StartBay it lower, with no buzz. But this AE has ZERO buzz, anywhere! And I have not yet even considered the truss rod relief setting. Looks straight; but have not needed to do a full setup yet. 12th fret comparative intonation is perfect, if to almost perfect on one singular string. Perhaps still stretching-in; as brand new. Very impressive.
Who knows what prices are going to do for a while(NO CRYSTAL BALL) ; but $75 *can't* be regretted for this luxury AE. This is it! And doesn't their policy allow returns for nearly any reason? Where's the risk? It has cost more than this for a long while; so I wouldn't wait.
Seriously; I'm reporting (Since I did my homework first and so should you. And you can see all that detail, under the regular versions SD thread with sound clips and all). I figured it would be good; but it's way better than that! No joke. It's about the build quality and the (complex) resonance, with the punch. The extras, and the price. It's a crazy price. Of course any other way you can get the price lower then do it, slick dealer. I had an apology coupon too so you don't even want to know what I paid. Grand theft I think. You CAN NOT buy a used guitar better then this for this price folks. And AE extras with it? Come on.

What a deal. If you don't know how to set it up, you can take it to a reputable shop, and it's not that much money (maybe would double your outlay, depending on where you go), and you'll be in business. It's easy to learn the basics of setup though, and there's a chance this won't need it. Incredible price
I have had four of these through my hands (A/E or only acoustic) - each one has been without defect. I gave or sold (at cost) all but the one I recently got (acoustic only), and this is the lowest price that I've seen in over a year from Monoprice for this one. I am very likely to buy another A/E and have to sell or give away. The gig bag is also very nice and worth $20+. I think there's a strap, and polishing cloths as accessories in addition to the clip on tuner.
Every time I play this, I am left astonished how nice sounding, playing and looking this set is, and especially at such a ridiculous price for a solid top acoustic guitar.

My 8-year-old seems interested in guitar, he's done a few lessons on a cheap $40 plastic one and he's held interest so far. Think this would be a reasonable buy for him to progress on?

Contrary to buying tiny guitars for cute children; if he is not very small and not likely to be really small as an adult then I think this big ole (not that big) Dreadnought would be more interesting to him. Especially the way it sounds. As if plugged-in and more resonance and harmonic notes intertwining. It's inspiring to create with. And it is the goal and dream here as a really nice acoustic. Not just brands. So yeah, better to grow in to it, to a point. This is a steal he may never see again is HIS lifetime. Because a REALLY good acoustic guitar is a really good guitar. He can learn that "boring" academic practice, and first starts, unlike instant video game rush is a delayed gratification worth it's price. And not only that; what's boring about a guitar like this? Where you brush against the darn thing and it comes alive. Once he learns the magic of playing an open string and then immediately after just brushing that string at the 12th fret to create harmonic versions he'll be begging to learn more. And even thumping your wrist down for bass drum like syncopation and you may soon have a song writer on your hands. Just as soon as he gets a chance to go wild, without anyone judging then it's all over. Of course, on day one teach the best way to hold it, etc to avoid any bad habits. Guitar 101 books, site, library etc.
But yeah no mini's or First Act "guitars", this is the real deal. And despite the naysayers; Monoprice has a no risk return policy if you just don't like it and we're at $75 here! When they're out; they're out and you will wish you did. Who ever you are out there.
And if you crabs out there who are peeved; because you just bought a Martin, for thousands then just go BUY THIS too and enjoy both. Quit you're crabbing. It's real, and it's a very, very SLICK DEAL!

I love this guitar (I'll be buying another here in a moment) - tremendous value for what it is.
Some considerations for an 8-year-old - torso, arm, hand sizes are shorter than eventual, right?
will the child be able to reach over and around to play it (strum / picking hand)
will the neck scale be reasonable reach for smaller hands?
Is there some guidance to consider for sizing and age? https://www.dacapomusic.ca/blog/c...itar-sizes - I don't have an easy way to validate these recommendations.
He could definitely grow into it, eventually, is my look on it, though might be too big to play without some physical challenges.
Easy way to check would be to take him to a store to try an equivalent sized guitar for size. If not too frustrating (can't reach the strings, etc), buy it! If he's motivated enough to grow and play it later - buy it and hold.
Best wishes - I wish my family had the resources that you are trying to provide, when I was this age!
Yeah, that's good advice. It's not that I'd expect a little bitty person to manage with a guitar they can't reach to play. Or absolutely never get a scaled down, low priced guitar; but it's still two guitars and the money could otherwise buy better quality.
But the worries about hand size, arm length, short fingers and all that is disproved by people with handicaps doing it to perfection ANYWAY. So no, I'm not saying get a guitar so big it's discouraging. I'm saying where there's room to grow and if it's still manageable or even about to be (with fast growth) then that's perfect. Because in store's they will not hesitate to sell you 4 guitars; where one would do. And you know why. So the size recommendations; while important WILL be over done.
But the elephant in the room is here we have one of the best acoustics known to ever be put together; yet at the price of a cheap plastic toy. So the worst that could happen is if it didn't fit one person in the family and for now, then it would likely fit another. And for most people (generally) not expensive. Less than a mid to upper end lunch date nowadays. I mean one could skip Starbucks for just a month and pay for this practically without feeling it. And still making the same drinks conveniently at home, while doing it.
Most likely this guitar would be the perfect size for the average 8 year old + before about 24 to 36 short months. So getting slightly oversized yet perfectly playable is the best way to go. Unless we're talking smaller than average and even likely when full grown. Even then it's preference. And many smaller than average people still prefer a Dreadnought size, for the best sound. In fact a parent could get this for the parent(s) themselves first(or two), have great fun with it and so tell your son; that if you see he understands improving for about 5 minutes a day on it, bit by bit (delayed gratification maturing) then it will then become his very own grown up (fancy) guitar, and for him; potentially for LIFE.
If you can't play some musical instrument 5 minutes a day then your work/life balance is off. It's not all about what people think of your performance. It's what you think about your music; that matters and can greatly benefit you.
Happy Days.

Returns? Monoprice charges return shipping and guess how much that is for an acoustic….,
