I have had doctors suggest taking something and actually told two doctors to go ahead and prescribe but after picking up the meds and reading the possible side effects opted not to use either. My luck, I'd get the worse side effects. One drug, Salsalate, was prescribed by a rheumatologist, when I lived in PA. The other drug, Duloxetine, was prescribed by a pain doctor here in MN.
Duloxetine is Cymbalta. You see the tv commercials for drugs like Cymbalta and Lyrica and everybody is walking around all happy like they're at Disneyland. You almost think that the drugs are like candy but they're far from it. I don't know anything about duloxetine other than you were smart not to take it unless you absolutely had to. Doctors want to give you this stuff even when you tell them that you don't want or need it. I don't need drug addiction as an additional problem to the ones I already have.

I've seriously been considering getting some edibles but there is so much info out there I'm not sure what to trust. Mentioned it to my doctor and he had no problem with this action but they also seem to come with a set of possible side effects. I never smoked weed way back when in my younger years so I have no clue what to expect. Oh well, maybe one of these days.
Please read up on the edibles. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with them, at all, but I have read a few articles about how even people who smoked weed back in the day were not prepared for edibles. It has to do with how easy it is to 'overdose' on edibles. For the most part, ONE very small edible is the equivalent of smoking a whole joint, so it's not easy to 'start small'. On top of that, some people have one small edible, the feeling doesn't come on quickly enough and so they take multiple.

I smoked a little weed back in the day and can say that I could feel it with only one or two hits off a joint. I'm not sure I ever smoked a whole joint all by myself, so I'd be very hesitant personally to try edibles. And if I've read it correctly, the edibles can't be split down to smaller pieces to equal just one or two hits off a joint.

Thanks for this suggestion. I'm always open to trying something new. Site wouldn't let me rep or I would have.

I had another case of low potassium this morning. It was frightening. I couldn't think and I had a splitting headache. I popped a couple of pills and snapped out of it. My potassium was at 2.5 when I went into the hospital two weeks ago but I didn't have symptoms like this. I wonder how low it was today.

Around a year ago, I had pain on my left side going from my neck to my fingers. It was really bad and nothing helped. I had a spinal x-ray and they said that I had severe arthritis of the cervical spine and the doctor gave me Neurontin. It stopped the pain but it put me in the hospital and I ended up having a brain cat scan and mri because they couldn't figure out what was wrong. I had severe vertigo to the point of not being able to walk without hurting myself. They switched me over to Lyrica and it was worse. I had to stop taking them. I get some pain every now and then but it's nothing serious. It took me a week in bed to finally get over Neurontin and then another week to get over Lyrica. I don't regret taking them. The pain was too much so I didn't have a choice. I have a pretty high pain threshold, too. I broke my hip and I never took any pain meds once I got out of the hospital. On the way home after I was discharged, I went to CVS to pick up my opioids and it took them forever to fill the prescription. I was sitting on the bench waiting and my ride was somewhere in the store and I ended up passing out from the pain. I didn't know how difficult it would be to get into a car with a broken hip and that's what caused it. I took the pills then but nothing after that and I went through hell on my recovery. I had to learn how to walk all over again. I couldn't move my leg an inch a couple of weeks after my surgery but I worked at it one step at a time and eventually I was able to walk again even though my doctor said that I couldn't do it. I went through so much pain with that. The pain I have now is nothing compared to my hip but my hip is nothing compared to what some other people go through every day. I hope that you're not one of those people. It's awful to live in pain and not give in to taking opioids.
Do you know why your potassium is so low; is it from a medication?

Lyrica is the med my brother took that gave him hallucinations. My sister in law told me it was awful,

I do have some pain every day, and while I wish it wasn't so, I've learned to live with it. It gets severe at times while other times it's just the regular consistency of it that becomes tiring. Especially when i don't get good sleep. I'm lucky to get more than an hour at a time before I have to get up from laying or sitting down to move around some.

I don't think I ever realized it's the generic for Cymbalta. That's strange that I never ran across that info. Other things I don't like about these drugs is that some possible side effects may not go away when quitting the drug and could be permanent and also that when or if one wants to quit taking them, more problems can arise. Again, no thank you.

I have been reading about edibles and it can get very confusing as there are many conflicting stories. As an example, I, too have read that one should not cut an edible into smaller pieces but the majority of articles say it can be done just that if the product to make the edible wasn't thoroughly mixed properly the amount of weed per piece could be slightly different. There are all kinds of conflicting comments like this and some of the stores I've asked often are just interested in folks taking product to get 'high' not for pain relief or to help with sleep which is my goal so I keep on researching.

Honestly, if I had the pain level worthy of looking into using the edibles, I might just look into smoking weed. It is smoking, which can impact your lungs, but I could take a puff, put out the joint and wait 30 minutes to see if my pain subsides or it calmed me to help me sleep.

Hugs to all of you who have pain.

I never figured you for a pothead. Maybe one of these days we can share a joint and talk about the good old days at CVS lol.

A couple of things. If you're a former smoker, smoking pot can get you back on cigarettes. I smoked in high school and when I came to my senses and gave up cigarettes I had to give up smoking pot, too. It sucked because I really enjoyed smoking pot just as long as I didn't smoke too much of it. Then I just sat there like a vegetable all night. Smoking pot definitely reduces your willpower so it would be a bad thing to do on a diet or if you're trying to eat healthy. It wouldn't be good for someone like me because I'm pretty sure that marijuana is bad for your heart (correct me if I'm wrong). One of the biggest problems with smoking pot is that you're not always sure what you're getting. You're at a party and somebody passes you a joint and you take a hit and realize this isn't marijuana. I've often wanted to start smoking pot again but I never have. It's probably a good thing but I'm not anti-marijuana in any way. I don't think that it's a gateway drug to heroin or anything like that. Smoking pot is a lot of fun. I've never needed anything more than that.

The best thing that I've found for insomnia is trazodone in the smallest dose. I'm out in 5 minutes and I get 4 or 5 hours of good sleep. The only drawback is that you can't take it in the daytime. It does weird things to you. My doctors have told me that it's the safest drug to take for insomnia. I have horrible insomnia and it gets worse after I have a surgery. I'm not taking trazodone now because I hate taking any drug but I would definitely recommend it in the smallest dose that works for you.

I have a friend who is in constant pain and needs something to get him through the day. Marijuana is a better alternative than opioids. My pain isn't like that. Since I had my heart attack and open heart surgery, the constant pain from my hip has gone away. It's been replaced by other pains but they aren't the kind that I need to take something for on a daily basis. I'll have an intense flare up where I'll have to go to the hospital but when I go home I usually don't have to take anything. My friend is always spaced out from pot. I wouldn't want to be like that. I fight when they want to put me on stuff like Ativan and Lexapro. Maybe I should just give in and be high all of the time and watch The Price is Right all day. It's not like I have to fight to get any drug that I want. The doctors are way too eager to give them to me. The biggest problem for me is that I won't the take the drugs that I absolutely have to take like potassium, Lipitor, and baby aspirin. I don't have a reason. I just don't want to do it.

Oh, one more bad thing about pot. It makes you post on SD a lot.

Just kidding. I haven't smoked pot since Nixon was president. At least I had a good reason to smoke it back then. I still remember going on a long backpacking trip in the Sierras. When I went in, Nixon was president and the Dodgers were comfortably in first place. When I came out, Ford was president and the Reds had passed the Dodgers. I remember that trip vividly because I had the pleasure of stepping on a hornet's nest. It was nothing compared to the hornet's nest that Ford's pardon of Nixon caused.

For cannabinoids the method of ingestion matters greatly. Inhaling means it will hit you faster and possibly harder but will subside much quicker. That is not a good method of ingestion for pain management. Edibles are much better in how it hits the system.

Additionally, you can absolutely get lower dose edibles. Reputable companies will recommend you start low and slow. By dividing up a gummy and waiting at least 2-3 hours before taking a second dose. Anyone that's telling people not to split isnt a well made gummy.

How do you find a reputable smoke shop? The ones I see are all in strip malls and not where I'd go looking for medical advice although an Ouija board could do better than my current doctors. I'm actually a skilled surgeon. I've spent many years playing the Operation board game...while smoking pot, of course.

I think that the weather forecasters are on pot. They couldn't have been more wrong about this storm but they don't have to worry. If they get fired, Wags will hire them to explain why your RR didn't print. The only qualification for a Wags job is a BS in BS. After a few years, they become PhD's. I've been feeling bad all day and have been inside since noon. I thought the storm was over but when I went outside to run to Vons it was pouring again. What am I supposed to do, call Catalina? Um, it's still raining and the cashier at Wags said that I should call you about it. Can you issue me a new day with sunshine? Yes sir, we'll do it this one time as a courtesy but please don't call again.
