I have the BOV900BSS model and I can tell you it's one of the best appliances in my house. I highly highly recommend it.
It you don't want the air fryer, I'm going on 10 years with the BOV800XL. Love it. My oven hasn't seen any use since I got it.

Be warned that Breville has a very funny idea of preheating. My air fryer pro will preheat for 450 at 225. The manual says it's expected for it to preheat at 375. So I RMAed mine, but even the regular behavior was weird.

While I like these ovens a lot, they are a bit overpriced. If you can find one of these at a Goodwill or other thrift shop (I have so far found three over the past few years), Breville has a program - last cost me $125 - where they will exchange it (will need to be able to read the serial number of old unit) for a refurb - they pay shipping. They "refurbs" I have been sent have been new - in retail boxes.

Any opinion on the best bang for your buck here?

I saw the other thread for the Joule version in brushed black stainless steal, but $449 feels like overkill and probably is since this would be my first multi purpose unit like this.

As a note, I am unlikely to use the air fry function much at all. I prefer the basket style and will have a cheap one as a companion to whichever Breville I may pick up.
We have been through four generations of these and it's still our favorite appliance in the house. Last time around i bought the air fryer pro BOV900BSS. I do not regret it even though i have never used the air fryer function. It's a bigger oven than previous versions which makes it worth it to us- we can cook meals for more people without using our regular oven. I really really like it. My wife bakes a lot and loves the proof function for raising loafs it makes a big difference. In the past we also bought a mini for the in laws which is really nothing like the regular Breville ovens- that's the one purchase i regret.

Oh that is interesting i still have some broken ones in the basement since i am a hoarder. do you have a link or more details about that program, i can't seem to find any online. I have never seen them for sale in Goodwill though I have 3 I go to regularly. You must live in a business class area.

It's a great oven mine just sort of broke though I had it for probably 10 years maybe less but this my second one
The first one had only a blue display it didn't change to orange when it was hearing.
The spring that holds the door shut went on it and the backlight for the display went too.
The new model has the color change display and it has been acting up for a few months now, sometimes it doesn't heat up.
I unplug it awhile and it works again but the other day I got sick of dealing with it and I decided to look up how to fix it
I took it apart and have just reflowed the solder on the relay board and cleaned the contacts on the connectors for the elements.
It is a huge pita to get in to and to put back together
There are 5 screws that are nearly impossible to reach ,I just got back from harbor freight because I had to buy a nearly 2 foot Phillips screwdriver just to reach them and they are not even magnetic
So far it seems like it is working but who knows
We used this thing all the time for 3 meals most of the time too.
Hopefully it just needed the reflow but I do want the air fry version but do they make one with air fry that is the exact same size as the BOV800XL is the question?
The BOV800XL is already taking up a lot of space on my counter and I am not willing to go any bigger.
I really wanted the joule but it is waaay too big ,too bad because the proof setting is really nice , I am always making pizza or calzone and the dough takes an eternity to rise in my house.
If this fix doesn't work I will definitely buy the air fry model but last time I looked at them in Williams Sonoma which was years ago the only air fry model was bigger than my BOV800XL
I kinda want to wait it out more to see if they make a mini joule that is the same size as the BOV800XL but that has Alexa and the extra settings like air fry, dehydrate and proof.
Who is actually buying these big ovens like the joule , I don't know too many people with that much space on their counter for that monstrosity

They offered that when I called them for advice on replacing a grease locker fan.

I'm down for the air fryer pro but @ $320 that's pretty steep for a supposed Black Friday deal.

According to some reviews, there's oil leaking and spilling onto the counter top. Has anyone experienced this? Seems like a major design flaw if that's the case.

I have the 950 (Breville had a deal back in April for 399$) but the 900 likely is the best bang for the buck. I use the unit everyday and love the size and the "super convection" feature. I always use that even without the "air fryer" basket. It crisps up my tater tots, reheats my proteins, finishes my steaks, etc. I also bake with it since it's a good size and never have to use my old slow oven anymore. In a gadget guy and the joule was a good deal so I splurged. Haven't I used its "smart cooking" features even once? Not really. Unless you consider the notifications it sends you when it's preheated/ done cooking a feature then yes.
Conclusion - go for the 900 if you can fit it.
How's the air frying feature compared to a traditional air fryer? Also, do you experience oil leaking and spilling out onto the counter top when you cook oily food in it?

FYI... refurbed units.... that's they way I went. Great prices.

Not really. As an example, the Air Fryer Pro, on sale for $319 is refurbished for $299. Hardly a great price.

they do not work nearly as well - and they make the oven a mess and hard to clean.

I think it could be because the fan is located on the side of the oven? Some designs have the fan located on top or in the back. The top fan location is the less messy and best for the air frying feature I think.
