REI has a number of Shimano pedals on sale

PD-R8000
https://www.rei.com/product/13001...olor=BLACK

Here are all the Shimano Pedals available:

https://www.rei.com/b/shimano/c/b...ls&r=c%3Bb

I was going to buy them off of ebay for a better price but too many debates about which are real and which are knockoffs.

Was able to get 9% CB through buying a gift card through a well known site to make it a little sweeter. Plus the REI rewards for members.

I have SPD-SL PD RS 500 I got on Amazon for $54

Forgive my ignorance but would these represent an upgrade in anything but weight? I ride mostly on a trainer indoors.

You won't gain anything upgrading to ultegra pedals. Just saves a few grams

Got it. Thank you. Do you think it's the same with shoes? I have Shimano RS300 or something like that (single boa). Was wondering if double boa would help

No. Shoes are one of the most important things when you're on the bike. Don't cheap and find out you're not comfortable. (If you're comfortable in your current pair, don't just get a new pair either!)

Some shoes have stiffer sole plates for more efficient power transfer, but for most riders, comfort is priority 1.

Ahh I see. I've never had much discomfort or pain. I do feel there is a fair amount of wiggle room / flex which may be costing power.

You might benefit comfort wise from a better fitting shoe. Higher end models usually use BOA dials for a nicer fit vs Velcro on cheaper models but if what you currently got is fine I don't think it's upgrade worthy on its own. Some wiggle room ain't a big deal though.

Flex will depend on the stiffness of the sole as others pointed out. The stiffer the sole the less flex and more power you generate. This comes at the obvious cost of comfort though. There is a power difference but if you ain't very serious about training you probably wouldn't notice it much, if at all. Most stiffer soles will be found on road shoes which are much harder to walk around in so keep that in mind. Though if power is your ultimate goal, that's what you want.

I only ride on trainer but I race very competitively on Zwift. Do at least 10 races a month and just got upgraded to their most difficult category (A) so I'll need all the power I can get. If it could give me a couple more watts and not cause discomfort it could be worthwhile. But like you said, probably not worth jumping the gun. Will likely wait until my shoes have an issue or something and upgrade then.

Oh ok, so yes. You might benefit from the stiffer sole. Especially since you specifically race on a trainer and don't gotta worry about walking around in road shoes much at all.

I would say, places like REI and LBSs do have very generous return policies for the most part. If you get fitted for a shoe that gives you that extra stiffness; you can probably try it out. That way you can see if you do benefit from any additional power in your metrics or get any discomfort with some actual usage.

Technically they will last a bit longer bearing wise since they use better materials too. But since it's just a part you connect to the crank once, a cheap bearing probably wont break on most either.
