It's a solid player. It's usually the one people recommend before jumping to the Panasonic that you mentioned (820). The cons of the Sony are that it can freeze mid movie and you have to manually turn on Dolby Vision when a disc has it. Sometimes it's hard to know which discs do and don't. The Panasonic also does up converting and color rendering better than the Sony (significantly in some people's eyes).

When comparing the Sony to almost any other player, it's as good or better than them. I'm going to pick another one up for our bedroom at this price.

I own both this player and the Panasonic 820. The entry level Panasonic is probably the only other one worth considering against this Sony.

I've never had that problem with this player and Dolby Vision. Try updating your firmware

How to connect audio hdmi out to a 3.5mm external computer speakers input? Thanks!
Hdmi to 3.5mm audio extractor, like this one in link below but you can probably find cheaper on Amazon or somewhere. You'd connect it to the audio only hdmi port on this 4k bluray player then to your computer speakers

I bought this last month and am already returning it due to 4k disc freezing. Don't waste your time and jump straight to the 820 which I did just this morning.

I have this player that I purchased couple years ago to play the 4K Blu-Ray discs for the Dolby Atmos sound system and can say that I did not have any complaints. All discs play pretty well...I was not impressed with the DVD upscaling capabilities as how it plays on my 4K TV? it may be okay on a standard HD TV.
I don't know who would use this player on a standard HD (1080p) TV.

For me, DVDs were nearly unwatchable on my 4K TV with an old blu-ray player. I figured it was because 480p content just didn't scale well to a 4K screen. But with my Sony 4KBR player, DVDs look almost HD, and blu-rays look great. Anyway, it breathed life into my DVD/BR collection, but YMMV.

I got the non-region-free Sony UBP-700 model from Walmart a couple of years ago and it has worked like a champ. I wouldn't hesitate to jump on this deal if looking for another 4K player.

Is this the best option with SACD support? Not sure what I'm missing with discs currently on XSX/PS5 but would like HDMI out surround SACD audio since my player is analog out. TV is pretty good (S95B)

If you are only concerned with SACD, and not Blu Ray, I think you're better off going with the BDP-S6700 [bestbuy.com] standard Blu-Ray player. It's $120 regular price, and you might be able to find it cheaper around the Holidays.

Because neither of these models have a built in DAC, they're just going to transport digital signal, 1s and 0s, from SACD to your reciever, external DAC, or whatever you're using in your setup. So I seriously doubt there will be much, if any, difference in sound quality between the two.

For video quality, this deal is much better b/c of UHD 4K disc support, Dolby Vision, etc. But if you don't care about that, might as well save a few bucks and get the cheaper one.

I have both players. Got the Sony first, then switched to the Panasonic 820 due to the disc skipping issue with multiple 4K movies (doesn't happen as much with blu-ray) as has been noted by numerous other users. And yes, firmware has been updated with the Sony. The only negative I have with the Panasonic is there is no direct subtitle button on the remote and you have to go through the movie menu to turn on subtitles.

From what I can find on a quick Google, the difference between the UBP-X700M and UBP-X700 is the 700M is a region-free model, whereas the 700 is North America only. But specs and performance should be identical. Someone please correct me if that's inaccurate.
The M also has a HDMI cable.
