If you are in the Plex ecosystem, HDHomeRun is the way to go.

It is a good deal if you don't have any interest in exporting recordings.

The 4th Gen. Tablo DVRs are not compatible with the 3rd-party tools that allow exporting recordings from previous models (seemingly per mandate of the new parent company). (FWIW, I like to export recordings of dramas to my Plex media server.)

Oof well that stinks. I'm a big PLEX guy too but was considering one of these for extra tuners but nah.

I bought one of these and I am kinda disappointed. There was a software update that made it work better, but you can't use it with a computer, can't even install the iPhone app on a Mac... Which means they intentionally don't want people using it that way. Also 2hen I first trued to use it with a roku express it straight up froze the roku. Apparently you need a roku express 4k or better.. So I had to buy one of those.

The app works OK until suddenly it doesn't. A common problem is when I go to watch a live show from the roku the taboo will say it can't see the station, then I pull out my phone and it sees it just fine.

It's a hanky product. Honestly all of these TV capture and recording things are made by sheisters. The whole lot. Lol

I haven't really used Tablos, but most everything I've heard about them over the last few years says they're pretty reliable and easy to setup. If the above is your takeaway on TV tuners in general, then I'm going to assume the majority of your issues are of the PEBKAC variety.

I don't care about exporting anything or using on computers, laptops, phones.
I don't use Plex.

Question - can I have it on live TV and pause or rewind the current show?

What I need is ofr it to record OTA shows. I'd like it to record 1 football game while I watch another.

I can share that I have had this for a few months and while slow (app and streams take a while to load) it has been quite solid. I have installed it in my attic and have a Ethernet run. All the tv watching which is mostly local news is done Hisense tvs with Rokus or standalone Roku devices.

I agree. There is a limited lifespan of these since they use ATSC 1.0 and that is currently due to go away in July 2027. Who knows if that date will be extended again due to ATSC 3.0 struggling to get off the ground....but who wants a device that could be obsolete in less than 4 years?

I like how everything is free but you have to lay for the program guide. Didn't the FCC create these digital channels to broadcast the guide as well? Shouldn't this be free? I've been looking into any of these options (I have an HDHomerun Extend currently) and would like to DVR but why would I have to pay for a program guide? I've tried to use my Synology's Video station which is pretty good, but there's no Guide. Sitting there and manually inputting times while looking at the HDHomerun screen for the next 24 hours of programming is ridiculous.

The android tv native "channels" app provides a guide for free. They stopped supporting the app but you can always sideload it on your android tv. I think android tv now has a built-in guide, but I am unsure, I am still using the native channels app.

Does the 4th generation Tablo require a subscription?
No. There are no subscriptions, contracts, or hidden fees with the 4th generation Tablo whatsoever. Programming from your TV antenna as well as the 40+ included internet-based streaming channels are absolutely free and there is no cost to enjoy Tablo apps, features, or guide data.

But I can't find any details about ATSC 3.0

Will just get a new HDHomeRun when I need 3.0 as it is compatible with Plex

I have been researching this. This is the best 'simple' solution for Cord Cutters IMO -- no subscription fees and made for 'dummies'. I wish it would have 4 tuners, of course.....but for what you pay 2 tuners is fair. FYI, the FAQ on the web page shows they are planning a 4 tuner version.
