I picked this one up today and can chime in on a few quick things.

Yes, it's not the quickest thing, however it can be very fast with some small tweaks.

1) Opted out of S mode - pretty painless.

2) debloated - just manually uninstalled the preinstalled apps. Im sure there's a quicker way to do it with a script.

3) quick adjustments to turning off privacy, notifications, things that send data to Microsoft.

4) 4GB of memory is soldered and added a 8GB DDR stick on the open RAM Slot. System recognizes 12GB now.

5) Open m2 SSD slot - Popped in a old 250 GB Samsung 970 Plus. Boots perfectly and much faster plus have the built in 128GB eMMC for storage. The SSD operates at 3500Mbps where as the eMMC storage is at around 300Mbps.

6) There is also a SD card slot for more storage.

Includes 1 year of office 365 which is solid value if you were already paying $70 a year for it.

The only con I find is the screen. It is VERY lackluster and leaves alot to be desired. It is usable, but thinking of plugging in a monitor if I was going to do any lengthy work on it.

USB C only does data, no charging or display port, however I knew that going in.

It is light and plasticky in a good way and the blue makes it seem more expensive than it is.

Yes I used Macrium Reflect to clone the disk, then the below instructions change the boot disk to the new SSD drive. Afterwards, formatted the 128GB eMMC storage using the disk management tool.

Step 1. Type "UEFI" in the start menu.

Step 2. Click "Change Advanced Startup Option

Step 3. Click "Restart Now" in the Advanced Startup" section

Step 4. After the computer reboots it will come up to a blue screen with "Continue", "Turn off your PC", "Use a device" and "Troubleshoot". Go ahead and click "Troubleshoot"

Step 5. Click "Advanced Options" and click "UEFI Firmware Settings" and click "Restart"

Step 6. This will open the BIOS screen. Go to the "Boot" menu and make sure that option "eMMC" is on the bottom and your SSD is above it.

Not sure why people make such a big deal out of this, let alone a factor in the buying decision. You can simply opt out if it during your initial set up.

Would it be practical to use this as an alternative to a mini-pc just to run Homebridge?

I don't need it, but I want it. About $230 out the door to upgrade to 20GB DDR4 and add a 500GB M.2 drive.

Office personal 1y is worth $30.

$200 otd is not too bad. But hopefully BF may have something $200 with an ips screen and ryzen 5300u level cpu + 8gb ram + 256gb ssd.

Even without upgrade, it should be a much better experience.

But unless you really need it, e.g., as a kids laptop, then don't get such a low budget device.

as opposed to which modern laptops that struggle with "web surfing" in this day and age?

"this laptop will run MS Paint, Calculator, and Notepad with ease, however if you're a techie that wants to tap into the power of the internet, you'll want to upgrade to one of our web browsing capable systems"
There are plenty of cheap laptops on SD with far worse CPUs that do not surf the web smoothly.

Honestly that is thinking small if your buying hardware. Look into Home Assistant or Habitat as they can both push far more devices and capabilities into homekit. They also have the added benefit of being 1000x more capable for home automation, while still allowing you to use homekit if you want.

Anyways I would still recommend a mini PC over a laptop for said application. For one the power draw will be significantly less with something like a mini PC using the Intel n100.

Picked up mine today.

As is the laptop is unsuable. First thing I did was convert license to Win home.

Remove back cover:

1. Removed all screws visible from the back (Note shorter screws installed in the lower edge of the back cover). Used a spudger on the top right corner and lifted the tabs

2. Unplug battery

3. Installed 8GB Ram and 500GB NVME drive

4. Reinstall cover

5. Boots fine and recognized the NVME drive and total memory of 12GB.

Note: To get into bios hit F2 key on powerup.

Will update once I complete the fresh install of Win 11.

If you do a fresh Windows install, how do you keep the OEM license and not have to buy a retail license for the new install? Or are you just doing a reset?

Usually Windows license is embedded in BIOS, so it will activate automatically.

Isn't there a switch that disconnects the battery when the blackplate is removed?

By the time you tweak the software, add the additional RAM, add a faster SSD…and still end up with a slow laptop…painful.

A 6-year old Intel Core i5 8th-Gen U (mobile) CPU is TWICE as fast as the Pentium N6000. I can go to a local PC recycler and walk out with an old donated laptop that's twice as fast as this for pocket change.
