DS224+ uses J4125 which is what my DS920+ uses and does plex transcoding perfectly fine

False.
224+ has Intel cpu and GPU.
Hardware transcoding works great on this box.

DS224+ is Intel, not AMD. Just stop posting.

I'm unsurprised by the number of people twisting themselves into knots over transcoding as Synology do a terrible job of segmenting their lineup and articulating the benefits.

Just use Plex on the backend to organize media and Infuse on the device end to handle file compatibility and playback. Why even introduce transcoding into the discussion. 923+ will be more than capable of this.
Or just get a ds423p or ds224p and handle any client under the sun with no hassle. (Plus Plexpass….)

423 isn't on sale, and why would I pay $40 a year for Plex Pass when Infuse is $10 a year to do the exact same thing?

I wouldn't say the software is "crap." I would say it's second best. There's always room to improve and I'm sure it will as time goes on. The same can't be said for hardware. Hell, the 923+ is a complete failure in the transcoding department and that's unredeemable to me. But I'm interested in a NAS strictly for Plex, so I'm biased.
AFAIK, QNAP has nothing comparable to Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR).

QNAP makes nice stuff, but only supports traditional RAID configurations.

For home use, SHR is a very big selling point.

2 bay has been great for me so far, very reliable. Upgraded the ram and using a USB Ethernet 2.5Gbps for better speeds.

When it says 2 bays, it literally means you can only hook up 2 drives to this system?

Is there any functional reason to get the DS923+ if I already have a QNAP TS-453Be? I know people generally prefer Synology software way better than QNAP, but is the actual hardware capability better than what I currently have?

can't I just connect a low powered mini pc to the nas if I want to run a plex server? can the mini pc just pull the video files from the nas and then transcode on the mini pc? (to solve the issue of the r1600 not having igpu)

Or spend a little more and grab a QNAP TS-464
Why stop there? 45Drives HL15 all day long. Live a little. ZFS all day long.

Yes, that should be no problem.

Anyone know if the DS923+ will accept 4x of the 18TB shuckable WD drive currently at best buy? I don't see it on the compatibility list, but many online say that list never stays updated. Thanks in advance for the help.
