I ran across a large stand-alone display of these at Home Depot. It's an outlet tester and probe kit, originally $22.88, but clearance priced at $12.04.

I picked one up because it's Klein, and because it was cheap. Sharing in case someone else has any interest.

As always, it's a YMMV (and Brick and Mortar) deal. Good luck!

EDIT: Corrected model number

Never really understood the purpose of whatever these testers are called. They cost as much as a cheap multi meter but have 1/10th capability and just give a general guess on voltage. Say you're testing if a double AA battery is good. If it's 1.2V(dead/bad) it will show 1.5 (good) on tester. The plug testers are definitely usefully thought.

Thank you OP. All stores near me have these test kits in clearance and in stock. Grabbed one.

I think $12 is what it's worth. For this functionality you don't need to pay for the Klein name.

I'd rather have the kit that helps you locate the correct breaker in your panel. Takes the guessing out of locating the proper circuit since nothing is ever labeled.

They're more to quickly tell what particular voltage system you're encountering and whether it is AC or DC at a glance, but you're correct in that it is not something you'd want for accurate measurements.

Eh - I would suggest spending a bit more and get the RT250 outlet tester and a multimeter. This doesn't have continuity testing and only shows approximate voltage. I'm not sure who the target market for this is since it doesn't seem useful enough for either a DIYer or an electrician - home inspector maybe?

I know this won't do the job, but do you recommend anything to trace the circuit of an outlet that isn't live? Wires coming in aren't hot so I'm assuming it's link to where it is daisy chained is loose

I guess the 5 billion ads splashed across the page wasn't enough.

You want a non-contact voltage tester and trace the wire back.

No, it's not meant for that. Klein does make a tool for doing it.
