Canon has announced that the QRM system is dead, fully replaced by the RF series. With that said, the M cameras can still be nice and adapted to use EF lenses. Some of the M lenses like the 22mm are also very nice.

Price n eds to come down quite a bit more to justify this though.

The $500ish for the refurbished RP camera is the much better buy

I had this model with the 15-45mm lens. The HDR is its biggest weakness, probably at the Snapdragon 835 level or even worse. It doesn't perform well as expected in complicated lighting environment, and the dynamic range isn't the best compared to modern flagship phones.

I use M50 II and it is far from crap.

No camera beat phone for dynamic range because phones capture many photos and combine them.

How would this (overall) compare to my older RX100 mark 3 (for an amateur)?

So you would say this would be good for someone who is going to use their smartphone 90% of the time but have this around for special occasions?

I really need some advice on an entry level camera that may leave the house three times a year but isn't going to break the bank. Thanks in advance.
Unless you devote your time to learn about photography, I don't think it is worth it for you to invest in this type of camera with interchangeable lenses. From my personal experience, I have iphones, DSLR with different lenses, and a $400 point & shoot. I end up using iphone and point & shoot only.

DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK. You are better off buying a used better camera than this dead system. This is not a deal, it's a waste of your money

While they won't be releasing more M bodies, the availability of lenses and various bodies is there. For $300, this thing would get you several years of use, and works really well as a streaming/video conferencing device.

You will see the difference when lighting is low and object is moving.

Will it do 4k/60? Can it do continuous videos or does it shut the recording off after 15-30 mins? Can it run off USB power? Does it overheat in the sun?

Save the money and buy next year phone when comes up. This camera will not be useful and you will regret the purchase.
Depends on what you want to shoot. Wide landscapes? Your phone is fine.
Stars? You need a camera with a good wide lens.
Wildlife? Camera. You can get a decent zoom lens on these beginner platforms.

I have the M50 and, despite the limitations of it being several years old, it works really well when I need it for stars, long exposures, etc. And is my webcam the rest of the time.

I think a few things you need to figure out would be: How much do you want to commit to it (money & learning wise)? and what are you trying to get out of it that the smartphone doesn't have?

You can get a Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR with Lens for $139 on offerup.. of an older Canon REBEL DSLR for as low as about $40-50 and a decent (50mm) lens for another $50 and get fantastic quality out of it. You lose the newer features like 50Megapixels or 10 frames per second shooting, but for images the quality can be fantastic.

The EOSM is basically one of these, in a much more compact body. If you want that nice separation of subject ("Portrait Mode" on a smartphone) and high resolution/high quality images.. the DSLR (or the M, or the RP) will get you that. But to really make any use of these, you want to invest some time into learning what the aperture does, shutter speed, different modes and not just using it as a point and shoot or phone camera. If you're wanting something that's just point-and-shoot like a smartphone, the smartphone will probably get you most of the way there. It's when you actually use the features that these cameras have (like various lenses, or flashes) that you get to start seeing the best results

May buy this as I've been waiting for a deal on one to have an even smaller EOS M camera (still nice even if there will be no new bodies are lenses). But I'm hopeful Canon will have these for cheaper refurbished on Black Friday or Cyber Monday and prefer black anyway. I'd be very surprised if Canon doesn't at least match this price on refurbs on or before Cyber Monday.

Might buy it and not open it yet hoping for a better deal during the return period.

Depends on what you will use it for and if you have a top tier smartphone camera. The M200 is really aimed at the smartphone photographer who wants a larger sensor camera. Have to rely on touchscreen for a lot of the controls (again designed to be an easy transition from smartphone users).

But I'd kind of say this is better for someone who plans to use it regularly or maybe for a dedicated travel camera to bring something small on vacations where you'll take a lot of photos outdoors. For other special occasions I'd be leaning towards getting something a bit nicer that might not be quite as small, but either would have to look used or spend more money. Still a nice camera for $300, but the included lens is mostly only good to use outdoors during the day. It also won't give you much background blur (because of a small max aperture as with most bundled kit lenses), if that is something you want.

Mainly the reason I really like these cameras even if they have been discontinued is to use with Canon's EF-M 22mm f/2 which is even smaller than the kit lens and fairly inexpensive used as far as lenses go. Hard to get such a nice compact setup with a quality lens without spending a lot more or getting a lens thats not quite as good. Canon's EF-M 32mm f/1.4 is an even better lens but not as compact and is more expensive. Or Sigma's 30mm f/1.4 for Canon EF-M mount is a good alternative to that.

I like the included kit lens for hiking or maybe walking around town during the day, but for "special occasions" you might be underwhelmed by this if you stick to only the kit lens and auto mode. Especially likely to be disappointed if expecting to use this indoors or in low light. This camera made more sense as a smartphone replacement back when the very similar predecessor M100 was released back in 2017 or at least back in 2019 when the M200 was released. Smartphone camera tech has come along way since then and to a lesser extent cameras in general. M200 still has very solid autofocus and image quality, really just wish it had more dynamic range.

My daughter has several EF lenses that I could use for this but the cost of the adapter along with the cost of the camera makes it a tough buy. Is there a less expensive adapter?

This seemed like a good deal until I read the comments... That said I gave up on dedicated cameras because it's to much to schlep around...

I know... I took a basic photography class and bought a dummy book for my Canon DSLR. The problem is I don't use them enough and forget all the instructions when I need them LMAO. He seems to be in the similar situation as mine when I first bought my DSLR.
