In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.

I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

My 5 years old LG OLED Tv have integrated netflix and disney+ app and the user experience so far so good. I using jailbreak Oppo 205 for BDMV and ISO playback from NAS. Is this worth to invest shield pro to play h265 mkv mp4 and some china streaming apps? I also having google chromecast 4k for travelling purpose only.

Please tell me! No sarcasm. I have Plex on ds920, use GCTV, and have zero issues. Everything is fluid, all media on Plex plays fine with no lag, search is great. So for someone like me, what benefit does this bring?

Tried one last year, and it worked but no difference in picture or Audi quality vs GCTV.

Am I missing something? I don't game on my TV, and won't.

Anyone know of a media player that supports 4k 120hz? Thought this one did until I saw its capped at 4k 60hz.

Shield has a specific use case. If you don't have a home theater setup (not a sound bar) to take advantage of hi-res, lossless audio then I would move along because this is overkill for basic streaming.

They sure have milked this Nvidia shield for the last four or five years without an update I have two of them but they are starting to get dated I also have the Apple TV and it seems to be faster now
One big advantage for the shield is that it can be turned into a plex server

Pretty amazing this is still at 170. Has a specific use case for sure (lossless audio passthrough, one of the few boxes with 1gig lan, game streaming etc) but hard to see the value at this price when you can get a whole ass N100 mini PC for like 120 quite often

Just my opinion, this hardware is long in the tooth. I have 2 of them and have loved them for a long time but I can't help feel that in 2023 that this experience could be so much smoother and snappier with newer performance hardware. At this price it feels like overpaying in 2023. Don't get me wrong, there is not a better pure android tv box on the market right now, but Nvidia needs to upgrade the hardware to smooth the experience out.

The only real advantage that the Shield still has over other media players is the ability to play 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray rips with lossless audio correctly passed through to a receiver. It will only play the minimum enhancement (MEL) of Dolby Vision profile 7, though. There IS a substantial difference between lossless/HD audio from a Blu-ray and streaming audio (~20Mb/s vs. 1.5Mb/s). If you want to play 4K Blu-ray rips, the Shield is the (only) way to go. If you're streaming, there's no reason to get a Shield over any other streaming device.

I always see people comparing the shield to the Apple TV but for the specific use case of streaming local files (Plex, Kodi, VLC, etc) how is Apple TV better? You can't do so reliably on Apple TV unless you pay an additional fee for Infuse. Once you do Apple TV is way more expensive.

AI Enhanced upscaling is second to none, but the fact that this is a 4 year old device is showing its age. My Shield TV Pro that's less than a year old stutters way too much. They need to replace this already.

AFIK you'd need a Xbox Series X or maybe a PS5. It's not exactly a 'media player' and also, the only content I'm aware of that is 4k @ 120 is games.

Unless you're saying a 120 hz screen is better because the 24 fps of movies divides nicely into 120 - better than 60 at least. . . .

Do you have a display that does 120 hz? Or G-sync maybe?

I want to love my 2019 Shield Pro, but I experience nothing but stutters and audio sync issues no matter what I do. Factory reset, repasting, changing refresh rate. Nothing works. At this point the only thing I use it for is local media playback in Kodi (Plex cannot sync audio).

At this point, it's a 4 year old streaming box based on an 8 year old chip running 3 versions of Android behind.
I use my Shield to stream 4k content and it works very well, including for fast forwarding, pausing/restarting etc. These activities used to bog down my earlier players but the shield pro is perfect. It also works well with the newest Fire Cube. If you are facing audio issues, see if you can switch to a lower audio stream to see if it helps like from a 7.1 mix to a 2 channel mix. May help see if the audio stream is the issue.
