In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Thank you for saying this. I have 2 Nvidia Shields and 8 AppleTV4Ks.. I just can't help but straight out laugh at people who are like "This is the best streaming device ever". No its not. I bought the Shields first before I bought the ATV's.. because back in 2015 this was the only device that could literally play any file using Plex/DLNA server streamed from my Synology NAS. This was the magical important playback device for my dedicated home theater which has a projector, screen and 7.2 surround speakers. I wanted the best picture & best sound possible.. without bothering with a bunch of physical Bluray discs.

Of course this was also a very long time ago. Now having used both Shield & ATV on a weekly basis.. IMO the ATVs work much better for practically everything BUT Bluray rips with lossless audio. That's because AppleTV outputs everything in Dolby. So when I want to hear a DTS-HD MA audio track (or the full range of sound from a movie) the Shield is still my go-to device. For any other content that is NOT a Bluray disc (aka every other streaming app).. or any other TV around my house that is using either built-in sound or a soundbar... none of this matters.

So if you aren't using a Shield for Bluray movie rips.. I cannot think of any further reason to purchase an old ass Shield, instead of a new AppleTV4K in 2023. The Shield has an old processor, feels slow to navigate, and continues to give me random issues. Sometimes apps won't open or respond, sometimes the entire OS locks up, and sometimes I have to get up and pull the power cord to hard reboot the device to get it working right again. I've also found many Android apps are not updated as often as those on AppleTV and it seems like Google is only adding more ads to AndroidTV.

The interface on ATV is significantly easier, faster, and overall better for practically anyone to navigate. This is especially important to me as I now use the ATV streaming box on all 8 of the TVs in my home. So doesn't matter if my wife.. young kids or even 77-year-old grandparents grab the remote.. everybody knows exactly how to turn on the TV, find the app they want to use, and navigate to whatever content they want to watch.
As someone who loves the Shield Pro - this is a really valuable post. I DO need (little strong there) the codec capability, but not everyone does. Also, the removal of GameStream was a major shot to people who bought the device FOR THAT feature.

For the price, it's hard to justify unless you need the codec power. I bought mine in 2021 and haven't had any issues since then aside from random (not often) freezings. Also, I'm very anti-Apple (just for how closed off the devices are), but would love someone to come to the space and one-up the Shield Pro. Even if Nvidia just makes a new model with 8gb of RAM, anything would be a welcome improvement.

Still one of the best if not the best options out there. Nvidia did a great job with future proofing it.

I bought mine in 2017. This beast still runs beautifully! I mainly use this for movies and TV shows. Netflix, peacock, Amazon, Kodi all work great on this device.

I'm still using the 2015 model. It's still the beast. I also have a 2017 model sitting in a drawer for travels. There's no reason for me to buy this at this price.

This lacks AV1 decoding support. It also can't playback Youtube in HDR due to lack of it's support for VP9.2 (Youtube's HDR codec).

As far as alternatives, the only one close to as powerful without these drawbacks is the Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen. If you do get the Fire TV though, spring for the better remote as well. It's backlit and can beep when you lose it.

If this was $100 or less I would buy another in a moment - but at this price it just doesn't make sense. I'd prob. try the Apple TV if it had a more open ecosystem, but the inability to sideload and access certain things prevents me from using that (and, realistically, Roku) as my comprehensive solution for a "tv" box at home (not server side).

TL;DR
Get the fire TV Max 2023 version.

Long Version
While this is a good price, the normal sale price of 170, and as a shield Pro owner, I would only buy a shield Pro at this price if I needed a Plex server.

The fire TV cube 3rd edition, and the fire TV Max 2023 version can both pass lossless audio. TrueHD/Atmos via Plex. But to get DTS:X you'll need Kodi.

According to LonTV review on YouTube, He was able to get the fire stick Max 2023 version to work with Plex and 4K Blu-ray rips that had *Dolby vision*.

Plus the other advantage is the fire TV sticks now will auto framerate switch for Netflix and prime content.

So like I said, as long as someone does not need Plex server, you are MUCH better off just get the 2023 version of the fire TV Max on sale or Black Friday deal

The GPU and CPU cores in the Shield are from 2014/2015. NV Maxwell and ARM A57. Rather vintage. It's also HDMI 2.0 because of this. Android TV also certainly has its limitations.

Though I suppose at $170 it's not a terrible deal considering the limited alternatives. I'd rather use a mini PC though.

Eating popcorn while reading the repeating rants of 'it's old and too expensive' vs 'it's still the best streamer out there' .

Using the version before this. Still working great. No need to upgrade to this. The step above mine is not worth it. I will upgrade, definitely, to the next version.
