In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Thank you for saying this. I have 2 Nvidia Shields and 8 AppleTV4Ks.. I just can't help but straight out laugh at people who are like "This is the best streaming device ever". No its not. I bought the Shields first before I bought the ATV's.. because back in 2015 this was the only device that could literally play any file using Plex/DLNA server streamed from my Synology NAS. This was the magical important playback device for my dedicated home theater which has a projector, screen and 7.2 surround speakers. I wanted the best picture & best sound possible.. without bothering with a bunch of physical Bluray discs.

Of course this was also a very long time ago. Now having used both Shield & ATV on a weekly basis.. IMO the ATVs work much better for practically everything BUT Bluray rips with lossless audio. That's because AppleTV outputs everything in Dolby. So when I want to hear a DTS-HD MA audio track (or the full range of sound from a movie) the Shield is still my go-to device. For any other content that is NOT a Bluray disc (aka every other streaming app).. or any other TV around my house that is using either built-in sound or a soundbar... none of this matters.

So if you aren't using a Shield for Bluray movie rips.. I cannot think of any further reason to purchase an old ass Shield, instead of a new AppleTV4K in 2023. The Shield has an old processor, feels slow to navigate, and continues to give me random issues. Sometimes apps won't open or respond, sometimes the entire OS locks up, and sometimes I have to get up and pull the power cord to hard reboot the device to get it working right again. I've also found many Android apps are not updated as often as those on AppleTV and it seems like Google is only adding more ads to AndroidTV.

The interface on ATV is significantly easier, faster, and overall better for practically anyone to navigate. This is especially important to me as I now use the ATV streaming box on all 8 of the TVs in my home. So doesn't matter if my wife.. young kids or even 77-year-old grandparents grab the remote.. everybody knows exactly how to turn on the TV, find the app they want to use, and navigate to whatever content they want to watch.
uhm, how can turning it on be hard ? I press exactly ONE button on the shield remote and it turns everything on it needs to. IF it doesn't you have your setup done wrong. (eArc anyone.) As far as the interface.... If you don't get the shield interface I am sorry but you have bigger (other ) problems. ?

Also, I NEVER have any issues on my 2019 pro. no lockups, no response issues... It's been perfect.

Cannot get it to stream 4k videos that I created without constant loading on Plex. No issues with Apple TV or Roku with these same videos. I don't think it's unable to, just doesn't seem to like working with Plex and 4k. I love this for netflix and upscale capabilities.

any reason to use this over a Xbox Series X? I stream 4k HDR files pretty often with high bitrates. Does this handle that better than an xbox or naw?

I appreciate everyone's input. I have been contemplating which one to get, shield pro or ATV 4K. I have 3 of each and want one for my patio tv where we hang a lot. I didn't want to spend $200 lol. And neither wanted a cheap crap like fire tv

Best tv box, they really need to upgrade it. The processor is old.

I'm still using the previous version of the shield on two TV's. I don't even mess with plex. I stream from my nas shared via dlna. I playback with the kodi media player and it literally plays every single audio and video format without any issues. Only gripe so far is the TY app doesn't support hdr. Great player.

My experience is with the series S. My issues has been that the passthrough audio option is is app based. Physical media works fine, I will see my receiver go though it's different audio modes as the disc boots. However when playing media through plex or kodi my receiver never off of saying ATMOS. Where this gets annoying is is playing back lossless audio files I hear music from the height atmos speakers. This means that the passthrough is not working and that the receiver is now doing it's own guess working processing the audio.
I assume it's doing the same thing for blueray rips?

Anyway, I just ordered one. The conclusion I came up with is that it's dated, it's always $200, and if you have a home theater and want to play anything other than psychical media, that this is still the best option for optimal audio.

Still have a 2017 Shield on a secondary TV, but we also switched to an Apple 4k on our main setup. It's the only Apple product we own, and it simply works. Like you, we only use it for streaming.

Question for those who have this and the modern LG OLEDs....for just streaming from Netflix, max, Hulu etc, does the Shield provide any advantages in picture or sound compared to the native TV apps?

Still blows the competition away. It was that over engineered. I have a bunch of steamers but this is still my flagship.

For my Shield usage I don't do gaming or have a home theatre system, but I use this as my Plex server. It's hands-down the best bang for your buck in that respect with hardware transcoding included free.

It also handles Stremio/Real Debrid/torrentio which Apple TV cannot. You could run that on a cheaper Android device like the Walmart Onn if that's all you're looking for.

I will say that the Shield is a phenomenal Plex server... until it isn't. Maybe once a year the permissions (or something) change from an update and it gets hosed up so I rebuild it. It's easy to do and well worth it to me.

I also like the remote for the Shield. I hate the gesture(?) remote on my Apple TV. The light-up buttons on the Shield and "find my remote" are great, although I wish it beeped 10x louder.

I also have the first version, but admittedly it's been sitting on shelf for many years. Is there any good reason to buy an updated version if I wanted to start with plex again?
