In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Shield has a specific use case. If you don't have a home theater setup (not a sound bar) to take advantage of hi-res, lossless audio then I would move along because this is overkill for basic streaming.
Some soundbars can take advantage of it as well. Something like the Samsung 990C for example.

Do I gain anything switching to this from an xBox One?
i would also like to know this, as a XB series X owner running Plex app + synology ds1817+. I shoot a lot of 4k footage, and cant' tell if the playback stutter i'm getting is because of my network throughput or because either the Xbox or synology can't handle the encoding

I'm still a little bitter about the ads that Google started forcing on all AndroidTV's, years after we purchased them. Yes, I have a 3rd party launcher that avoids the ads, but it's not as capable as the stock launcher. The whole thing makes me mad, and I'm trying to get out of the Google ecosystem in general. I feel like every one of their service has either gotten worse or absurdly expensive.

I have two older ShieldTV's and I do believe the Shield Pro is the most capable streamer on the market, but I'm not buying any more of them.

The Switch 2 is rumored to be using a new Nvidia Tegra SoC. The original Nvidia Shield used the same SoC from the Switch, which leads me to think we might be seeing a new Shield sometime after the Switch 2 launches. I'd personally hold on unless you really need this.

I have the nvidia shield tv 2017 version. The last one that was with the gaming controller. Don't use it often, but it worked great with emulators, roms especially n64 games. Not lag at all. Did notice after not being used awhile the rubber buttons on remotes get sticky.
I actually have both 2017 version and 2019 version, LG 77" OLED C1 and an old top of the line 55' Sony LED.

2017 is laggy and needs resetting once every 3 weeks or once a month. 2019 is much snappier and faster to load and rarely needs resetting (once in the past 2 years). 2017 is actually connected to one of my Orbi satellites while 2019 is strictly wifi so definitely not network issue.

I'm almost tempted to buy this but still hoping (forever?) that Nvidia will update this so I can replace the 2017 Pro that I have.

I want to love my 2019 Shield Pro, but I experience nothing but stutters and audio sync issues no matter what I do. Factory reset, repasting, changing refresh rate. Nothing works. At this point the only thing I use it for is local media playback in Kodi (Plex cannot sync audio).

At this point, it's a 4 year old streaming box based on an 8 year old chip running 3 versions of Android behind.
sounds like a user issue. No lag on either of my shield (pro or tube) streaming local media or web streaming. Check your network.

Thank you for saying this. I have 2 Nvidia Shields and 8 AppleTV4Ks.. I just can't help but straight out laugh at people who are like "This is the best streaming device ever". No its not. I bought the Shields first before I bought the ATV's.. because back in 2015 this was the only device that could literally play any file using Plex/DLNA server streamed from my Synology NAS. This was the magical important playback device for my dedicated home theater which has a projector, screen and 7.2 surround speakers. I wanted the best picture & best sound possible.. without bothering with a bunch of physical Bluray discs.

Of course this was also a very long time ago. Now having used both Shield & ATV on a weekly basis.. IMO the ATVs work much better for practically everything BUT Bluray rips with lossless audio. That's because AppleTV outputs everything in Dolby. So when I want to hear a DTS-HD MA audio track (or the full range of sound from a movie) the Shield is still my go-to device. For any other content that is NOT a Bluray disc (aka every other streaming app).. or any other TV around my house that is using either built-in sound or a soundbar... none of this matters.

So if you aren't using a Shield for Bluray movie rips.. I cannot think of any further reason to purchase an old ass Shield, instead of a new AppleTV4K in 2023. The Shield has an old processor, feels slow to navigate, and continues to give me random issues. Sometimes apps won't open or respond, sometimes the entire OS locks up, and sometimes I have to get up and pull the power cord to hard reboot the device to get it working right again. I've also found many Android apps are not updated as often as those on AppleTV and it seems like Google is only adding more ads to AndroidTV.

The interface on ATV is significantly easier, faster, and overall better for practically anyone to navigate. This is especially important to me as I now use the ATV streaming box on all 8 of the TVs in my home. So doesn't matter if my wife.. young kids or even 77-year-old grandparents grab the remote.. everybody knows exactly how to turn on the TV, find the app they want to use, and navigate to whatever content they want to watch.
I've read the Plex experience is poor on the Apple TV. Can you comment on it?

The other downside of switching over to Apple TV is the loss of sideloaded apps such as STN.

Most people here probably have a Plex server
Me too. I use my Nvidia shield Pro as my Plex server. So I will always have one.

I know a lot of people that have an old PC lying around and they use that for a Plex server. Some of these PCs are 10 years old but they still work great.

I have to agree with you. Sure, the hardware is 4 years old. But it is still plenty powerful enough to stream any content and upscale 1080p blu-rays to 4K.

A lot of people don't realize how fast the Nvidia shield is. In terms of user interface speed, it's still really fast.

For my Shield usage I don't do gaming or have a home theatre system, but I use this as my Plex server. It's hands-down the best bang for your buck in that respect with hardware transcoding included free.

It also handles Stremio/Real Debrid/torrentio which Apple TV cannot. You could run that on a cheaper Android device like the Walmart Onn if that's all you're looking for.

I will say that the Shield is a phenomenal Plex server... until it isn't. Maybe once a year the permissions (or something) change from an update and it gets hosed up so I rebuild it. It's easy to do and well worth it to me.

I also like the remote for the Shield. I hate the gesture(?) remote on my Apple TV. The light-up buttons on the Shield and "find my remote" are great, although I wish it beeped 10x louder.
You can turn off the gesture on the Apple TV. Hated that and changed it in settings. I too have a shield but only for kodi

I'd like to know about plex on Apple TV as well. If anyone can comment on emby vs plex, I'd love feedback as well.

You can't use Plex natively on Apple TV like you do on Shield. There's a lot of issues. Everybody who uses Plex or watches local media on Apple TV pays another premium for another app called Infuse Pro that can be a client for Plex. Idk why no one ever mentions this part. It's a big consideration. Infuse Pro cost almost as much as Plex

Same here. They used cheap quality materiels on the remote buttons and mine are all sticky too.

This is an awesome device but it should not be this expensive still. Mainly because Google is now forcing ads on them with the updated UI. Price should be much cheaper with the ad subsidization by Google ads.

That said, someone else needs to come out with an updated device that runs android TV, and not let google force ads on it like these shields have. AMD please?

This has been my line of thinking as well. It would be easier for me to hold off if my LG C1 had DTS pass through

Damn, they milking this cow still. $99.00 is a bite but not this much for a four years old tech ( eons in terms of technology year).
