In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.

I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

This is by far the BEST Plex client out there. This is my #1 use for my streaming needs so I have absolutely loved my Shield TV Pro. Nothing beats the Shield's compatibility in Plex. Wanted to get more for other TVs in my house, but the price is always rough. Wish it would go down a bit more Big Grin

I've considered this to replace my Steam Link. It works fine generally but freezes and gets buggy pretty often. Using moonlight or something has anyone had a better experience than with steam link?

Also what refresh rate does this support? I'm not seeing it anywhere on the product page. I'm assuming it's only 60hz.

I only use this for Plex. I normally use the free Xfinity streaming box for everything else, but Plex is really lame on it.

Plex works perfect on the Shield. Kodi too for that matter, but I don't use that too much anymore.

I've been using it with Sunshine/Moonlight over the past few months without any issues. I stream 1440p from my desktop to a 4K TV, and use the Shield to upscale the Moonlight stream to 4K. Both devices are hardwired to the router with gigabit Ethernet, and any added latency is imperceptible, even for fast paced FPS games like COD.

My TV only supports 4K@60Hz, so cannot comment on support for higher refresh rates. If you plan to use upscaling, the Shield's maximum supported framerate is 60Hz.

I have a 2017 Shield that I use primarily for streaming Kodi, Netflix, Amazon, and Live TV. Also, have a 3.1 surround. I've decided to upgrade my 5 y.o. LED to an OLED (C3 or S90C) this Black Friday. I know I can't get the full experience with the OLED with my current Shield, thus, why I'm considering this deal. Reading through all the negative posts about 4 yo tech and a possibility of a new Shield gives me pause though.
Should I just bite and upgrade to get the full OLED experience? Or should I just continue using my 2017 until the next generation Shield?

I have one of these and the 4K Google Chromecast.

This is better in nearly every way.

Unless there's something you just have to have with this you're probably better off with the Chromecast because it's still 1/8th the price and a very similar interface.

I love the fact this has a built in Ethernet port and available USB ports - I use them - I acknowledge that most modern non-I.T. folks won't. I've noticed even a lot of the younger I.T. guys don't even grasp why you're better off with a cable most of the time.

Even gaming - if you're using a game stream setup, Internet or from an in-home PC, I can't see a reason to go with this over the Chromecast with possibly the exception of Nvidia's streaming service.

I have plans to buy another one of these eventually for other plans, but I'm a nerd, I don't suggest most people follow me.

This device rarely gets updates any more, my major frustration with it. The fire TV cube current gen is considerably faster too, and will be cheaper in the sales

I believe this is 100% on Nvidia. Google constantly releases updates to Android TV including major versions ever single year. Since Nvidia has released this with Android TV 9, Google has released Android TV 10, 11, 12, & 13 with Android TV 14 probably releasing before the end of the year.

This is all on NVIDIA and not in any way Google's fault.

Compare to this say your Samsung Galaxy phone where Samsung puts the latest Android on your phone within a month or two of Google releasing the latest Android. Google updates Android and it is up to each manufacturer to update their own software because each manufacturer does their own flavor.

Precisely why I still have mine for the livingroom/Home Theater and then cheaper AppleTVs scattered in the other rooms. The Shield's standout feature (for my usage) is its USB ports and the ability to watch movies "acquired on the high seas" locally from an external HDD and streaming off my NAS with Kodi. I actually work at sea as a merchant mariner, so my "travel" Shield essentially gives me video-on-demand (using my HDDs) wherever I go without internet offshore. So if you want big screen entertainment and you live near or off the grid, or under a metered data plan, this is a viable option.

Problem is Google hasn't covered the high end market well, so its still the Shield for me. It sounded like they may do something with ATSC 3 - but that didnt pan out. (Check out the adt-4)

A new Shield with new processor, and more ram plus ATSC 3 tuner is still on my wish list. Smilie

Nvidia will continue to milk this for a few more years or until people stop buying it. They see no reason to come out with something else when they're getting people to still buy this. the components in this are probably worth less than 50$ the rest is pure profit.
