In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.

I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Just got my Nvidia Shield Pro and love it. Roku feels sluggish in comparison.

It still has way more processing power than any other streaming device not sure what you guys are complaining about.

As someone who loves the Shield Pro - this is a really valuable post. I DO need (little strong there) the codec capability, but not everyone does. Also, the removal of GameStream was a major shot to people who bought the device FOR THAT feature.

For the price, it's hard to justify unless you need the codec power. I bought mine in 2021 and haven't had any issues since then aside from random (not often) freezings. Also, I'm very anti-Apple (just for how closed off the devices are), but would love someone to come to the space and one-up the Shield Pro. Even if Nvidia just makes a new model with 8gb of RAM, anything would be a welcome improvement.
Apple is a RIPOFF, you have to pay for EVERYTHING, Nvidia plays Xbox games pass, Nvidia games, emulators, android games, google games and alot more. Plays 4k HDR dolby Plex movies. I get Everything FREE on Androids Shield movies, games, music video, emulators and ALOT MORE. APPLE IS A RIPOFF LIKE CHET

Nvidia needs to come out with a new one. I have two of these, one is the older and one is the newest version, they are showing their age, not as smooth anymore. I hate the shape of the new remote too, i prefer the Walmart brand Oon remote better.

The only real advantage that the Shield still has over other media players is the ability to play 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray rips with lossless audio correctly passed through to a receiver. It will only play the minimum enhancement (MEL) of Dolby Vision profile 7, though. There IS a substantial difference between lossless/HD audio from a Blu-ray and streaming audio (~20Mb/s vs. 1.5Mb/s). If you want to play 4K Blu-ray rips, the Shield is the (only) way to go. If you're streaming, there's no reason to get a Shield over any other streaming device.
This is what sets the shield apart from others. My plex library is entirely made up of remux bluray rips and a good amount of Dolby Vision/HDR10+ titles, my Sony a80j has no issues with playback. My Denon reciever has zero issues upscaling the 1080p titles and passing ddatoms/dtshd/auro3d audio to my 7.2.4 setup.

I wanted to get a shield but it's getting older and older. With how the price keeps being the same, things that were possible and available feature wise have been reduced. Nvidia doesn't seem to care I'm guessing. I'll just keep on waiting since it's not a serious thing for me. I was looking at the apple side but it's not my style.
Why fix what's not broken it's still just as smooth as any other streaming device and plays everything

So it's a better idea to use my synology nas as the Plex server and play it from the shield rather than have the shield act as both the server and the player?
I prefer it but some Synology NAS's handle transcoding better than others. Depends on if you are transcoding a lot of your Plex media or not. I'd give it a shot and experiment.

everyone doesn't have the same experience or uses for a product as others. A better experience can be had from a newer version because things have changed. Things can always be better. I know a few people that has the shield and had problems with software and other issues. Then removing or bailing out on features.

Some of you noobs dont understand the concept of nvidia shield pro. The device does not do transcoding. The transcoding needs to be done on a nas or equivalent. Shield is to replace your useless samsung sony tv garbage software since they lag for most of the time. and i agree that it is still the best on the market

Wow. That's completely wrong. The Shield Pro, essentially alone amongst the inexpensive HDMI add-ons, can be both a player and a Plex server. PlexPass isn't even required for hw transcoding.
