If I could only get back all the money I wasted on coffee makers before buying my Technivorm, it would not seem expensive at all and I paid full price for mine. Pair it with a smart plug for a timer if that's your hold up.

The difference between this and the $20 ones are going to be even temps throughout the brew and a more even distribution of water. The $20 ones take awhile to heat up during the brew process so you'll often see them initially see temps around 80C to start and then go into the 90's as it progresses while just dumping water onto your grounds. Proper, even temps and water flow lead to a more consistent extraction which theoretically lead to better taste.

With all that being said, many other factors weigh into taste. Bean quality, ground vs pre-ground, grind settings, water quality, etc. It's really a rabbit hole if you want to go down it. Most importantly, your preference plays into it. If the $20 coffee maker is making you happy, stick with it.

For someone who doesn't drink a pot of coffee on their own, is there any way to brew one cup at a time with these or much less than a full pot? I've always wanted one, but can't justify the price until it's on sale like now and making so much coffee at once.

Yes, just use four-six ounces of water in the reservoir with the appropriate amount of coffee. My wife often only wants one mug, with a different brand of coffee than I prefer.

I have the 4 cup version. I love it. Super simple, without any LCDs or lots of moving parts. I expect this thing to last until our kids are out of the house.

The only gripe is that I have the metal carafe, and for some stupid reason their engineers did not think to make a divot in the spout to allow the liquid to come out of the carafe. So when you're trying to pour the thing into a cup or worse a thermos (small orifice), then the thing spills everywhere and I have to rinse the thermos. It's maddening. I'm was willing to buy an aftermarket carafe but at this point after owning the thing for a year I have adapted to only spill coffee ~25% of the time when I'm pouring into a thermos.

Otherwise yea, get this thing. I have it set up to a smart switch that turns this thing on 15 minutes before I wake up so that hot coffee is ready to go. I now buy the stupid $5 coffee (straight up black coffee with no fancy stuff) maybe a few times a year. I don't understand the people who pay for Starbucks or a boutique coffee shop every day.

My next move is to get an espresso machine because my god the caffeine high from an espresso is just so much more efficient and cleaner.

Now all I need to do is convince the wife. Now whether to get that espresso machine first or a new saw...

You can make a half pot with these you just have to stir the grinds for the first minute or so with the carafe removed so it doesn't drain. Once you get all the grinds fully immersed you can brew as normal.

I bought this a while back. Not sure if I just don't have a refined taste, but I don't notice much of a difference between this and my old $20 basic coffee maker. They're both just water that goes through coffee grounds.

Yes, this is effectively mimicking a good pour over method but automating the work and scaling up. In my household we use this for 2 people who drink 20oz each a day.

We bought this in early 2020, right as pandemic started. My partner and I work from home, and make a 8-10 cup pot of coffee at least 5x a week. This makes a great pot of coffee (we originally bought it because it does heat the water to proper brewing temps), and the stainless steel carafe is still solid as can be.

This thing is an absolute beast, and has not failed us at all (knock on wood). The full price may seem steep, but i would definitely be ok with paying full price to replace. 10/10 recommend to all looking for a solid, no frills, coffee maker.

Yeah feel like a really good time saver rather than doing like 2-3 pour overs. But for me, I drink 16 oz coffee in the AM and just do a v60 pour over with 30 g of beans and it takes me about ~4-5 mins. I also kind of enjoy the process in the morning.
