What is the use case for these SSDs? I was told by a storage guy at work SSD is not the way to go for archiving pictures/media. What are you folks using these for?
If you are a videographer this would be good for offloading in the field. I would not use it for long term storage.

It seems like this drive keeps speeds at just below 1000mbps consistently (after cache is full) compared to the X8, that drops to below 200mbps after 150gb I believe if I remember correctly.

Not saying either is bad. Just that it depends on your needs.

Want to add to the decade vs decades thing. Ive had 2 SATA SSDs chilling unpowered since around 2009. Plugged them in a couple months ago to look for some files and it showed no data integrity issues. That's around 14 years without power. Also had 5 HDDs stored with them from roughly around the same time and 3 of those just didn't work. So take this same size of one as you wish lol
You could have just fired up those HDDs once a year for a little bit. Letting a mechanical motor sit for a decade and a half isn't going to result in good things. Your data is probably just quietly sitting there enjoying a little bit of bit rot but not much else. Should be recoverable... besides the bit rot.

Expensive... but recoverable.

I have a 4tb Samsung t7 hooked up to a thunderbolt port for full 1000mb transfer speeds. I use it as my Steam Game drive. I can plug this into any computer and have my entire steam game library with me. Works well with steam. I use my internal 4tb ssd for Xbox game pass and blizzard. The external ssd is actually faster at 1000mb through my thunderbolt port then my internal ssd at 500mb. My 1tb M2 is reserved mostly for the operating system and any files I save since it operates at 1500mbs transfer speeds.

I don't use mechanical drives anymore. I just make backups of important files and pictures across all 3 drives for redundancy.
I don't think that drive supports Thunderbolt. Your machine might support the USB 3.2 extension that allows the top speed though.

I have the same experience, not quite as old of drives but 5+ years. One thing to remember though is that back in the day they used SLC, then came MLC, then TLC, and now we have QLC. SLC will survive the longest by far, followed by TLC and then the least amount of time QLC. It'll be interesting to try this in 10+ years with QLC drives, to see if they still have everything without corruption.
Qlc is the off brand version of dvd for longevity.. dont count on data staying locked for 10+yr in powered off state..

This is TLC. Uses Micron's 176L 3D TLC NAND, according to Anandtech

Is it any better than this model?

Seems to be the same speed for $159
X9 Pro has two more years of warranty, and much more compact. Crucial Pro SSDs come with 5 years.

Also X9 Pro is probably more reliable, seeing as a lot of X8's were made during lockdowns. Most (>50%) of my SSD fails in four decades on this planet... came from drives built between 2020 and 2021.

Saw this but went with the X9 Pro. Samsung T7 may be slightly more reliable, but getting 5 years of warranty would mean a T9 at $60/unit more. Plus Micron is an American company, and I backup religiously. Also my 8TB 870 QVO failed in the first hour, and I have to return it tomorrow.

In the end, after all that horse trading, I got two 4TB X9 Pro's and four 18-20TB WD's to do backups at all my offices and residences. Keeping writes off my MacBook to reduce soldered SSD failure risk.

Not all USB 3 is made equal. There is 3.1 Gen 1x2 and 3.2 Gen 2x1. Both give 10 Gbps. On many PCs, including Apple Silicon Mac, Gen 1x2 will be throttled to 5 Gbps.

Similarly USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 will be throttled to 10 Gbps (instead of 20 Gbps). These affected machines lack a second USB channel, even with Thunderbolt (USB4 20/40 Gbps mode).

[And no, USB4 doesn't mean support for USB 3.2 Gen 2x2... USB already has two non-overlapping 10 Gbps and 20 Gbps specs].

As long as you're regularly powering up you won't have a problem. The problem is when you are doing long term cold storage (no power to ssd). That's when data get corrupted.

SLC>MLC>TLC>QLC.

In terms of regular uses it make no difference as lonng as the controller is good at correcting errors.

A 4TB QLC will last a few hundreds TB of writes. Average life time use by regular users is below 10 TB.

The idea is the lock of the data decay of physical (electronics) or silicon failure

I think the Samsung is a better drive. Currently available at Samsung with EPP (or AAA) discount for $179.99. Also some chase cards have 15% or 20% back offers for Samsung.
Thanks, that works for me

Used for active files for editing video and photo work. Not mention to be archival. Use a RAID with high capacity 3.5 HDDs (redundant backups) for archival storage.

This is TLC. But it's useless SSD.
