Thanks. I picked up the outdoor plug. I plan on flashing ESPhome on it and using it with HomeAssistant.

Buying a few cameras for the first time from any brand. The OG sounds about right for what I need but I'm confused why I'm seeing recommendations to get V3 instead of OG.

Which cameras would be best for simple front yard and chicken coop monitoring?
The v3 is the best camera they make. Even without paying any subscription, you get a good camera with event recording and 24/7 SD card recording. The OG cameras are nice too (actual PQ is slightly better than v3), but they REQUIRE a subscription to be useful. For those of us paying the $99/year for up to 99 camera's (100?) then it really doesn't matter.

Wyze cams (the newer ones) work well, I love their doorbell, but I won't buy any of their smart plugs/lighting because of their lack of Home Assistant support. Tuya is cheaper and much easier to integrate, or just get Zigbee stuff that'll last forever and not spy on you.

OG won't work with the free unlimited plan
Can the OG be used with SD card without subscription the way that other models can?

Warning: Wyze is a scummy company and notorious for bait and switch. They are the equivalent of printer companies with how they will sell you the gateway device cheap , with freebies and features initially, then switch most if not all features to paid / subscription model leaving the unit near worthless and useless unless you continue to pay fees perpetually.
IDK Been satisfied with my WYZE Sprinker and Lock Bolt.

If you want bait and switch/perpetual fee's banter, lets talk about Arlo.

People wanting to use the camera's for RTSP and not wanting to deal with Wyze's firmware should look at https://github.com/gtxaspec/wz_mini_hacks which has a method to boot off the microsd card running custom firmware.
Dafang Hacks is another good option. I have a couple of v2s streaming via RTSP to Frigate for local detection with a Google Coral USB accelerator. That way, your data never leaves your house (or your country).

Yes. The interface is a bit different in the app, but I don't know what feature is they say is missing.

Can you please share specific examples?
They used to provide 12 seconds of video recording per detection, now you only get a worthless screenshot.

I agree that this sucks, but how does it compare to the competition?

Is that what you're going with, the "Lesser evil bait and switch scam company" apologetics argument?

I have a bunch of v3 cams and v2 door sensors and never paid for anything beyond the price of the hardware. They want you to sign up for their subscription services but you don't have to. You do lose some functionality without subscription but the products are still very usable.
Yeah I just bought the Cam Pan for $50. Paid $20 annual for their plus package because I don't feel like buying another SD card. It worked fine without the subscription

I haven't experienced this. What are you referring to? They are cheap, yes. But you have to pay for services just like arlo, etc. so I'm not sure what they are allegedly scamming one on.
They're probably v1 Cam purchasers. A lot of features that they now charge for were free when their OG cams came out. I can't blame Wyze for having to switch to a subscription model for cloud based storage or other server based functions since there's a cost to them for it, but I can see how OG users might be annoyed that they have to pay for what was once free.

I have a bunch of Wyze stuff I'm happy with, but I also don't need any of their longer cloud recordings or AI detection stuff that comes with the subscriptions.

Wyze has a youtube video suggesting a $0 custom amount to unlock cam plus lite. That upgrades you to 12 second videos instead of screenshots, and gives person/etc detection, which the free version didn't have.

To add, I have two cameras: one with cam plus lite and one with the annual subscription. The lite one sends notifications once per 5 minutes when it detects something, but still records continuously to a microsd card. It does 12 second videos and can detect people and so on. This is generally all you need. If you think the 12 seconds is too short, go back to the playback and record your own video from it, or just watch what was going on around that timeframe that the original recording didn't include.
