The 4TB X8 is a much better buy at $159 (10 more) for a drive rated at near double the speed in tests:

Fakespot ratings are for the reviews on product listings, not the products themselves.

You are better off putting the price of a second drive toward disaster recovery solutions like Backblaze or Carbonite. If you experience a flood or fire it's just a collection of duplicate dead drives. Plus, maintaining perfect mirrored redundant drives at home can be tedious depending on your setup.

You should post it. If you don't, I eventually will - although getting credit for someone else's work makes me feel a bit slimy. 🤷

Vielen danke.

Remember it is recommended to buy 2 of these drives. Typical procedure to have a backup of a backup if you keep everything on only 1 drive. In case one dies and you don't lose everything.

Old spinning rust drives backed up to overnight suffices just fine for that.

Still waiting for them to drop back to $30/TB. I'm just procrastinating because sifting through all my garbage files and deciding what to delete or backup is a nightmare.

This thing is huge, get yourself m.2 nvme drive with USB c enclosure adapter. It will be a lot faster and lighter and cheaper too

And a lot more easily broken. These are designed to handle the abuse of everyday carry items, which is the reason for the size.

Nobody says they've all got to be done at once - do a bit at a time whenever the mood strikes, and you'll get to where you want to be when you're ready. Perhaps you could divide up the files into groups to make the task less daunting - say by age (month or year), or by first letter or two. I find splitting major tasks into several smaller ones that can be done a bit at a time makes it easier to overcome my ADHD-fueled resistance to getting stuff done.

Try SyncThing [syncthing.net] to automate it once you've got things set up the way you want.

For sure. Tons of great cloning and sync tools out there. They will still be rendered ineffective against a pluming failure above your office desk 😂

Which is why I didn't counter your perfectly good Backblaze/Carbonite suggestions. My comment was more of a response to what you said at the end about it being difficult to keep backups current.

That's a problem in and of itself. I've half backed up files, forgot my place, and ended up confused when trying to restart it. Constantly shifting content, duplicate files, and reorganized folders make it hard. It's fine if you want to be messy or just mass backup stuff without being picky. Likely have to buy a 10TB drive though 💩

Yeah, you've gotta plan it out a bit. Create a checklist of steps you want to follow, and check off items as you do them to keep track between work sessions. Either put new things in a different location temporarily, or move all the old stuff to a temporary working directory before starting work on it. Then the first thing you should do is use a duplicate file finder program [google.com] to lighten the load before you even start the real work. I gave a Google link because everyone's preferences in how those programs work are different.

Hopefully, you'll be able to get it all done before too much accumulation of new files. To help you knock them out quickly after you're done the old files, try to force yourself to be a little more disciplined while storing the new stuff so you can merge the directories easily for the grand finale.

Been there, done that. It ain't easy to stick to it, but break it up like I said earlier, and you'll feel SO relieved once you're done.

Good luck!
