Dunno about particular models, but Brother brand printers are usually the go-to recommendation around here.

Every color laser printer I've come across here has complaints for one reason or another. Is there not a particular model that most people would recommend?

How's the scan function here? Does it do automatic 2-sided scan?
Brochure says yes.

Anyone else have issues with this printer not detecting paper loaded in the automatic paper tray? Canon forums mention similar issues from other users with different model #

I have the earlier model, the MF644CDW which had a similar issue. The solution is to set the paper type to plain paper and set the default paper source to use tray/drawer 1 and that resolved the issue for me. Nothing to keep you back from buying the printer.

One note that others have said and I can echo, definitely set up a static IP address for the printer in the configuration OR set a DHCP reservation on your router to ensure the printer has the same address. That should fix any connection issues that people have reported.

Other than that, these Canon laser printer have incredible quality and I'm still on the original black toner that came with mine after over 1500 prints. It does complain it is out of estimated toner volume, but you can simply bypass the warning and continuing printing.

it's hard to recommend any laser printer for home use other than a Brother unit. and if you need good color prints, you should be using inktank anyway. this is not a great value

I have Cannon MF733CDW. Love the duplex scanning but the printer but printing is not working well with a generic toner I used. Not sure what to do with it now. I dont really print much and scanning is what is most important to me. Can anyone recommend the best way to diagnose the issue. I dont want to invest in expensive additional toner cartridges to find out it still does not work.

No, the next model up does.

Brochure says it supports single pass duplex scanning.

I was considering purchasing a color laser printer to replace my 10-or-so year old Canon mf6160dw I bought around 2013 or 2014 after seeing how cheap these things have gotten, but with the comments about the price of toner, I think I'll stick with it. The other reason would be after thinking about it, I don't really think I need color for anything. At least I've never said "boy, I wish I could print that in color" yet.

It will cost more to replace the toner then to just buy the printer again (at this price and with canon genuine toner)

Solid printer. Easy recommendation. It even connects to Home Assistant to monitor ink levels.

I have this Canon MF733CDW (the same-ish looking printer, scanner, fax, etc combo) and I love it. I've changed the toner and yes it's expensive, but the printer is amazingly fast, scanning double sided is amazingly quick. I use it for a home office, and it's awesome.

My parents have the Brother Eco-whatever printer that you can fill the toner yourself, it's ink jet. That thing is fine, nothing wrong with it, but it's like 3 seconds a page to scan, and it can't copy, you have to scan and print.

It's about what you want it for. If you actually do make copies, or scan double sided documents, this is a dream, no jamming and super fast. If you never do those things - and print photos, go with something else.

I use LD Products toner for Canon and Brother machines. It is not OEM but a few times a year they give coupons and I can get the CMYK hicap for under $100. They have never given me an issue and quality right up there with OEM. I had a bad cart once, they shipped a new one to my house no questions asked.

I agree toner costs are horrible, the only change in the last two Canon generations is to make the DRM in the toner harder to defeat. They are just putting themselves out of business. They could just make them affordable but they dont they use the dead Gillette razor and blade model.
Another vote for LD. I use the at home and at various work clients with no issue. Their site is easy to use, support is helpful, they can do tax-exempt, and they run deals all the time.
Unfortunately they have nothing for this printer yet, I'm assuming it's relatively new.

This is often brought up but most printers ship with starter cartridges that don't have anywhere near the output of the higher yield replacement consumables that they are quoting prices against.
However, it certainly pays to do the math and decide for yourself.

If you don't need color, stick with a BW laser. Simpler so usually more reliable, and cheaper cost per page. Plus the older ones are almost always going to have more readily available toner replacements and be cheaper to boot. Newer toner cartridges tend to be more complicated and expensive as vendors try to lock you in to OEM replacements.
