You likely may run into the possible known issues with Sony players and you have to manually switch on/off DV with them.
There is a possible solution to the issues but if you don't have a display with a good processor, could diminish performance.
Not a big fan of the Sony players. Sony left a bad taste for people who bought the X800.
It's a solid player no doubt. But they chose not to implement Dolby vision through firmware.
Instead…. They made you buy the X800M2 revision to get literally the same player but with DV support.
If those Oppo guys are out there. Yes I know, if you were lucky enough to buy the player when they were still in business. They had the best unit.
Cheap TVs image processing can't compare to premium or flagship models so the players try to do what they can to make the images better. And even on these high end TVs your player needs to know what to do or not to do.
Having options is not a bad thing. And these are not just gimmicks or fluff.

So this finally happening and you can have Sony UBP-X800M2 for under $200 (I ordered one from Amazon for $192.95 New - open box). See the deal HERE .
As for me, there is no reason to buy Panasonic DP-UB420 when you can buy Sony UBP-X800M2 for approximately the same price.
Well you do lose out on Panasonic's Optimizer & HCX processors which are better.

I own both this and 820 and have not had any issues with either in almost two years.

Yeah the 820's on sale right now for 349. Has Dolby vision support and more functionality. Better build quality. This might be the last Blu-ray player produced. So upgrade to something that'll last and we'll do more
As an owner of both, DV is the only real difference IMO.
The added functionality of the 820 wouldn't be a benefit for most people and build quality doesn't do anything for PQ/AQ performance.
With the popularity of Samsung, people are understanding you can have good PQ without DV.
$349 is a great price for the 820 but you can easily be very happy with the 420 especially for the price difference IMO.
For me, even at that price I just can't justify upgrading my 420.
If it was $250 well now you're talking!
As long as they continue to make physical media there will be players made.
That is not changing anytime soon IMO.

Also Panasonic DP-UB420 comes without Bluetooth support, which is a deal breaker for me.
2. Panasonic's have been known to have fewer issues with 100GB discs.
3. The UB420 is a nice companion for projectors as most do not have Dolby Vision support.
...that being said, I own a $60 X700 (Pawn shop find)..and I've had zero issues with my discs. There is a local pawn shop selling the X800M2 in my area for $130 and it has been sitting there since the summer...I might go back soon and make them a $75 offer and see if they take it.
I am admittedly new to the 4k player space…but isnt the various options that each player provides the reason people choose one over another?
So yes: while they may all play your discs, some may have more features than others. No?

Same with Wal-Mart. Physical media about to become niche and once these stores stop selling media, players will be discontinued. Movies in the long run will go down in prices but hardware will go up due to scarcity and demand as once companies stop supporting them, they won't repair them.

If you are a person who goes to the length of buying physical 4k media instead of streaming and has a good OLED/mini-LED TV that supports Dolby Vision, you might as well get a player that supports DV. If you already have the latest Samsung that you don't see upgrading for a long time, maybe 420 will do just fine. Samsung likely won't support Dolby Vision anytime soon because they are one of the companies involved in developing the HDR10+ standard.

They said the same about DVD and it still sells more than BD & UHD combined.
As long as people continue to choose quality over convenience, they will continue to make physical media IMO.
Streaming AQ is nowhere near actual/true home theater, gonna be years before that happens, if it ever does.
