Would definitely get this if this had USB-C charging. Just that e-waste from big charging bricks.

my dell with a 10th gen intel does not specifically say it can charge usbc and came with a normal dell brick
but it will charge when i plug in a usbc and the symbol next to is is only the dp logo.
hard to believe this wont do the same thing, but i dont have any proof
this is a great price for a 12th gen but ive grown to accustomed to touch screens in my laptops

consumers should always do a full reformat of windows when you buy prebuilt... always. there's always bloatware on windows machines. a clean install is so brain-dead easy there is 0 reason not to do it. i'm sure a clean install will render the ram usage to 30% or lower
Your advice is excellent. But some of us need some help with the implementation.

Are you referring to formatting the disk and then an install from USB using the Win11 iso from Microsoft, or a clean re-install using the Windows Recovery. If via the iso, how do you get the drivers installed? From the Dell website? Doesn't Windows Recovery just re-install the OEM version with the drivers and the bloatware?

How does the activation of the serial number work when installing from iso? Where does the activation get the OEM number from, or do we need to acquire a retail serial number?

Thanks very much in advance.

Don't buy this one unless you're prepared to repair (immediately) or replace (eventually) the hinges, because they bind and then they break. And Dell won't help you out on that when (not if) it happens. The design of the 15" Inspiron is timeles - if you want to work on it you CAN turn this thing into a beast (it's got as much room under the hood as a '57 Chevy), but chassis build is more like '72 Ford and Dell refuses to do anything about it.

Best build quality for the buck today is probably the 16" Lenovo 2 in 1 that's on sale at BB for $550 at the moment. But it's also a heavy monster that you can't use outside in the daylight and can't expand the RAM cause it welded in. And $550 is a bit much for a Roblox machine.

But unless you want to be put in a position to buy yet another laptop in the coming year, this is probably not the one you want.

The hinges can be easily adjusted to prevent the damage you describe.
This is very good advice. Please guide us with directions on how to do this adjustment.

Thanks

When I buy a used laptop on eBay, I would install from USB but this can be tricky with UEFI and Secure Boot.

Anyway, I install Windows and then install the drivers from another USB that I had downloaded the drivers to from the manufacturers website.
I do not connect to wifi at this point.

Then I go online and get all the Windows updates.

Nowadays it's very easy to do. Use Rufus to make a boot USB - or simply format the usb stick in Windows using FAT32 format. Then copy everything from the Windows 11 ISO downloaded from MS and you'll have a nice boot USB.
Insert the USB stick and then power on the computer. Hold F12 during boot up and you'll see boot option/menu. Select boot from USB: UEFI option. From there you can erase/delete all the partitions on the NVME SSD and clean install Windows on the NVME. It'll be easy to go from there.
After install is completed, just go online and do a full Windows update. For Dell/HP/ACER/Lenovo etc brand name computers, all the proper drivers will in automatically installed via Windows update, even including the BIOS update. Install them all and reboot, you'll be golden.
Install all the software you need, complete all the customized setup of them. Then boot from a 2nd usb stick with Macrium Reflect or Acronis or Terabyte Image for Windows recovery usb, you can clone/copy/backup the whole nvme OS disk to an external hard drive. Anything happens in the future, simply boot up the Macrium Reflect recovery USB and restore from the disk image you made, and you'll have a nice OS again.
Remember: backup all your data before you do any disk image recovery operations.

I haven't had a pc for a long time. Do you still have to reinstall all the drivers when you format.

Any good imaging software you'd recommend to make a copy of the laptop in a clean state
I recommend Ubuntu (Kubuntu specifically) or Debian.

Thanks to both of you. As soon as mine arrives I'll be doing this.

Will Windows activate automatically and apply the original OEM serial number upon boot-up after the new installation from the iso, or do I need to obtain a separate new retail Windows11 serial number for activation? I'm hoping to prevent any unknown "surprises"....

Thanks again, and reps 4 you.

Windows should activate automatically when the laptop goes online.

If you are concerned, you can use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image file of the SSD. You would be able to re-image the SSD should something go wrong.

Easy if you haven't done it yet yourself or recently. Otherwise BS.
Besides, you shouldn't have to.

How? im really interested.
The video I used on the one I did a couple years back is here:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FsVWQoaZNls
and after reconciling myself to bite the bullet and do another one) the more recent 15" Dell I purchased went to an entirely different hinge (plastic instead of metal, so now it can't be adjusted) and the mounting was just as poorly built (if not worse) than before. It was also worth having the prior experience to avoid stripping out the retaining screws that hold the back in place or I might have had to rebuild some of the mountings as I had to do with the older one. Maybe needless to say, but this last one got sent back.

To this day Dell does some great electronic engineering, but the Inspiron cases are designed to fail, and even though it's only a couple hundred bucks for the whole thing we're talking about, the time consumed by an unexpected failure and the level of contribution of disposable laptops to e-waste are (to me) untenable.

Yes, 2% code ARMMPPS does not work any more ... 10% does, once you receive it via email. Total before taxes is 233.99 now.

I believe so, since I didn't receive it for an existing email account ... had to put in a secondary email, and received it within the hr.
