I happened to be running an errand near Home Depot, so I stopped there again and got some quick pictures of the paint issues on the red ones there.

Black ones and other red models I checked were all fine.

Probably just an issue with this model, from one production run or factory. And maybe only some of them. But all of them at my local store were like this or worse.
why are these always so expensive? its just a steel box with drawers
A bunch of reviews identify paint issues (peeling, rust, bubbles, etc.) with this, including on purchases as recent as this month. Buyer beware.

I went to check these out yesterday, as had been planning on buying the similar black one (different model) for the same price. Black one is in their printed and online Black Friday ad, but available now too.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky.../324617479

Red has power strip built in and soft close drawers (black one does not), but all of the red ones on display look like they had a red crackle finish on some of the drawers. Unevenly, like just one side of a drawer. Or just one part of the inside. Clearly not intended.

The fact that someone else has already noticed exact thing elsewhere makes it seem likely to be widespread.

The black ones all looked normal.

I'd prefer a paint job that looks better and will last, over a $2.99 power strip and bad paint. I'll slightly miss the soft close drawers like my others have, but I'll live.

I'm buying black.

If you buy this red one, inspect it closely at purchase or pickup time.

I bought a 46" version of the black one in April 2015 for $200. I have not had any problems with the finish since. Granted, since then these could be made differently or in different facilities. But I've liked it so much I have a deal alert set up just for this hoping to get another one. Guess I'll never see the $200 price again though.

Yea they downgraded their boxes a lot in the last couple years. Heavy Duty boxes use to be 18ga now they are 19ga.

The one in this deal is a "standard" duty one. So its a thinner 21ga.

Does anyone know if the handle can go on the left side instead of Right? looked at the instruction manual and it didnt seem like it but figured someone who actually has this can confirm.

I bought one of these last year (red) and no issues at all. They were already assembled so I didn't switch the handle as the power strip is on the same side as the handle and the smart wheels.

Why are houses so expensive? They're just sticks with mud walls

Why are cars so expensive? They're just a unibody with glass windows

Why are shoes so expensive? They're just cloth sewed together with foam glued bottoms

Why is food so expensive? It's just plants in the soil

I suppose it comes down to that it's just a lot of raw material. I don't know about this particular model, but some of those wood tops are fairly thick too, so the price of lumber could factor in. As a mechanic, the amount of toolboxes you'll purchase during your career is a lot less than something like a #2 Phillips Bit, which will be replaced often. I know it's an apples to oranges comparison, but I guess people are more willing to pay a higher price when they know it isn't a purchase that will have to be made (hopefully) ever again, unless they decide they need a larger box.

Thanks. I just ordered the red one for pickup. I'll check when i go pick up tomorrow. Maybe / hopefully its just an issue only with certain lots. What state are you in?

They used to discount the 46". Now for the holidays they came out with this cheaper version, narrower and less depth.
