But I was assured by Apple that upgrading to 64GB of RAM cost at least $800 …

Yes the memory in the M series is a bit faster than this memory, but it's all just standard DDR5 memory.

M2 Pro is actually faster than M3 Pro with respect to memory transfers and bandwidth. M3 Max is slower also than M2 Max unless you choose the highest end configuration.

Is 64gb ram very common now? I know 32gb is more than enough almost everybody and rarely are most laptops even 32gb preconfigured.

Most are 16gb ram which is more than enough for most people or 8gb ram.

Maybe if you're running multiple virtual machines, or using advanced video and graphics editors, otherwise all that extra RAM is useless.

Latency on this stuff is horrible. It is what it is with this generation of RAM, but...
3200mhz @ CL22 = 6.8ns
4800mhz @ CL40 = 8.3ns

SO-DIMMs are typically slower than their desktop counterparts and GDDR5 has typically higher latencies than the prior generation.

Too bad only 4800 MHz is on sale. Great deal for the capacity. Either 64GB DDR5 SODIMM 4800 MHz or 32GB DDR5 SODIMM 5600 MHz are on sale, but not 64GB DDR5 SODIMM 5600 MHz /sigh

"4800MHz Memory Clock Speed" - They are still with these fake ratings, it's horrendous. OK, these modules run at 300MHz according to Crucial themselves! When DDR memory originally was made they faked the MHz number because people didn't understand if you took 133MHz ram and pushed 2 bits instead of 1 it was DDR and still 133MHz. No, they HAD to call it 266MHz. ...then DDR3 they had to call THAT 533MHz (still...just 133MHz!) DDR4 was a debacle(and just like on GPUs (or 4G/LTE phones, really just faster 3G) not an actual generation, just a stopgap solution), and now DDR5 is the DDR version of DDR3 - but clock speeds are a bit improved. Crucial lists the min for DDR5 as 3200MT/s. I would love to see that as that is just a 200MHz stick of ram being sold as 3200MHz!

Imagine if ALL advertising was so false? Imagine if when they went from 32bit to 64bit cpus they claimed the cpu was double the MHz?? Insane! Sending 16bits a clock cycle and 1bit a clock cycle don't have anything to do with MHz....
