I remember playing this game with my girlfriend at the time and her family. She traded her resources to her sister which led to her sister winning the game instead of me winning. I couldn't believe it.
Luckily I brought 2 sets of boxing gloves to game night just for this reason.
We played one, new-person-to-the-game, round. Basically, I was open-handed while having inputs from both, excited children as well as my friends nursing their drinks. By the end of the abbreviated beginners game, it was on!
Between horrible or excellent roles of dice, resource negotiations, and a little luck, this game is wildly fun.
As of today, we've played seven rounds of Catan and I've won three of those times. It's gotten to the point that everyone does what they can to limit my movements, they think I'm some sleeper Catan mastermind. Nope, just really lucky with the numbers rolled, nothing else. They can't be convinced otherwise.
So, like a good uncle, I gave them an early Christmas gift, the Catan expansion pack. More spaces, more resources, more cards, more negotiations, more arguments, and way, way more fun.
Due to the fact that Catan has expanded into other themed games, I'm certain that this board game may eventually lose its luster, maybe? Until that time, I'm happy to be playing with my friends, helping get their kiddos away from computers, and having an evening full of laughs (and crushing one child's dream of running a sheep empire.. j/k.. maybe.)
If you're looking for some entertainment or something fun across multiple generations, especially with the upcoming holidays, I can't recommend this game enough. Now that it's on sale, it's a lot more approachable to folks who might not otherwise consider it at retail price.

For starters. Rolling a 2 or 12 is the same. Both get resources.
Moving the robber to neutralize a resource tile is instead a play that swaps a number tile. In other words, if you roll a 7 or play a knight, you swap a number tile and steal from anyone. Everyone can pull any resource card from the bank. This makes rolling a 7 good for everyone except those that get their number stolen.
Lastly, get rid of the desert. Put a resource and give it a number 7 tile.
In games you have a fighting chance and everything seems more balanced. You don't get steamrolled or locked out of games early on.
