Costco had the 128GB w/Ethernet model for $100 back in August. Holding for a deal on that.

Just an FYI but the Apple Store claims that as of 24th November thru 27th you can get up to $50 for purchasing an Apple TV device. This $50 unfortunately will be a gift card you can spend towards other purchases. Wish they'd just reduce the price instead.

CORRECTION: Gift card for new Apple TV is $25, not $50. So might as well snag the Costco deal, unless you're in the market for the Ethernet model.

I primarily use the streaming devices for DirecTV Stream and Plex. I have been using Roku Ultra's mainly because of the A/V pass through, where AppleTV will scale, and Roku Ultra plays nicely with Plex and my 1st Generation Apple TV does not. My 1st Generation also has issues identifying HDR signals and kicking into that format. The other HDR issue is that these files display choppy, despite the Apple TV being hard wired.

But, since I have recently subscribed to DirecTV Stream, I have noticed that the app runs smoother on the AppleTV, and will enter a smooth picture when changing channels quicker than the Roku. Plus, the AppleTV platform is much smoother and faster than Roku. I'm still having issues with the HDR channels, though.

Can anyone provide a comparison between the Roku Ultra and Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation? I have all of my products hard wired, so I would go with the Ethernet version. Will upgrading from Gen 1 to Gen 3 resolve my HDR and Plex issues? I am thinking of making the AppleTV my primary streamer, and if the Gen 3 will resolve these issues, I'll upgrade from Gen 1.

Might be best to just wait for the Apple TV 4K 128GB (3rd generation) - Wi-Fi + Ethernet to hit $99 again.

That would explain the 'up to' part. Thanks for the clarification.

Damn. The only thing that can make that deal sweeter is Target offering Apple GC for some discount like last year.

Can anyone comment on how the Apple TV interface and programming selection compares to Roku? My sister just bought a Roku Express for one of her TVs that she likes.

Would it be more or less complicated to have different streaming boxes with different controllers and interfaces?

She has Apple devices like an iPhone and iPad.

I just bought a Roku Stick for her main TV that's still in the box. She has an older 1080p TV but may upgrade to a 4K sooner since they're so affordable these days.

I don't think Ethernet is that important since her router is right next to her TV. But maybe Thread support would be good for future proofing if she gets some smart home stuff in the future?

The apple tv is the best streaming device out right now if you want a clean interface with little to no lag & no advertising everywhere like you get with android tvs/firesticks.

Not to mention the ecosystem integration. Screen mirroring, facetime, homekit, etc.

Switched from a nvidia shield pro to the apple tv about a year ago and haven't looked back. Shield's constant lag/buginess combined with Google's intrusive advertising insertion was too much to bear.
While the Apple TV is amazingly polished, where it loses to shield is with regards to audio support when using Plex and full HD/atmos audio tracks. Apple tv doesn't support bitstream which can cause some funky compatibility issues when matching movies on plex that has full hd audio and anything with atmos using plex app will be lost when the Apple TV decodes it to LPCM, which is just going to be the main channels in HD.

That the biggest feature that has kept me from replacing my shield units with Apple TVs.

Is there a huge difference between the 4K model and the Hd model. I have still have the Hd one and have been wanted to upgrade but I can't justify it while this one is still holding it down

So the 128gb ethernet version isn't going to drop back to this price, is it? That sucks.
