Disagree. This is a solid grinder. Grinders are expensive to make. They require precision and accuracy when making the burrs and aligning the drive system to get a consistent grind without a ton of fines. The burr design takes numerous iterations to get the flavor profile you want (Lance Hendrick talks about this in his video on the Ode 2)The motor requires enough power for the job. The Ode also has antistatic tech which makes a huge difference in retention and reduces messiness.

I dare you to make a grinder like this for less. You can't.

If you think this is overpriced, chances are this grinder isn't marketed toward you. Stick with your cheap burr grinder or whirlybird, if you're happy with it.

The encore produces more fines which leads to over extraction - however the encore is a damn good grinder - more so with the upgraded burrs. The advantage of this grinder is the flat burrs designed for filter coffee, the ability to upgrade to ssp burrs (though the gen 2 burrs are good enough for me), the anti static tech - and the ability to single dose with very little retention.
As with all grinders as taste is very subjective all that matters is how it tastes for you.

For most people the refurb Gen 1 at $149 on Fellow's website will do just fine. You miss out on the updated burrs, enlarged hopper, and better static control of the Gen 2. I have the Gen1 with SSP MP burrs and enjoy it for my pour overs and my wife's Moccamaster brews. This grinder gets you 90% of the way there for far less than very high end grinders. A great buy for people who spend the extra on good coffee.

I had a Technivorm and then went to Ratio, Ottomatic, and manual Chemex...with the manual Fellow Brewer and Chemex, half of the time I would screw up and the coffee was bad...ha ha..Technivorm was always great every time I use it...So Technivorm is on sale again at Amazon...I

I use the whirly at work because I don't want to bring a Baratza...I use Clever Coffee dripper and use paper filters...if you use a whirly bird and a paper coffee filters, the coffee taste great from my Clever Coffee dripper...you need to learn HOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET GREAT COFFEE WITH DIFFERENT CHEAPER PRODUCTS....I got rid of Gen 1 because of static and I would have to always tamper hard and more times and coffee being stuck...Also, I use Baratza Virtuoso plus now for the Technivorm...Encore are on sale for $75 at Marshalls during the holidays. We the consumers are being experimented on...Good luck experimenting on Gen 2.

I roast my own coffee with beans from Sweet Maria's averaging $6 per pound. I prefer Ethiopia and Sumatra beans. Freshly roasted coffee IS THE KEY to great coffee and the products that make them. Fresh coffee is not acidic and smooth!

Why are there a lot of bad reviews of Gen2 on Amazon??? Does anyone own Gen 2? Are you experiencing the Gen 2 issues like the reviews on Amazon? I used to have Gen 1 and changed to Baratza Virutoso Plus...For Gen 1, coffee was all over the place after grinding....I would always have to lift the entire Gen1 grinder to hit is on the table to get the coffee stuck on top of the grinder...the only good thing about Gen 1 is it is quiet...I use the Ross Droplet technique to minimize static and to keep my coffee grinders cleans...

The Encore fell off my options list last year and I don't remember exactly why. I think it might have been limited compared to the more expensive options. I needed a grinder that would perform well for espresso, that was my priority. I use it with a Flair

Yeah, I have a DF83 and still think I should've gone with the DF64. Great grinder according to the internet coffee nerds

as an encore and ode v1 owner lol ... stop talking out your you know what just to feel better about your purchase. i also own a 1zpresso J manual grinder and even that produces less fines than my encore. the Encore is still by far the best bang for your buck electric burr grinder in my honest opinion but it is definitely a step down when compared to the burrs you find in the ode regardless of the version. now, is the Ode worth the extra $180 vs the encore? that is dependent on the user and their prowess with manual pour overs and their palate's ability to actually dial in all of their beans accordingly.
