Disagree. This is a solid grinder. Grinders are expensive to make. They require precision and accuracy when making the burrs and aligning the drive system to get a consistent grind without a ton of fines. The burr design takes numerous iterations to get the flavor profile you want (Lance Hendrick talks about this in his video on the Ode 2)The motor requires enough power for the job. The Ode also has antistatic tech which makes a huge difference in retention and reduces messiness.

I dare you to make a grinder like this for less. You can't.

If you think this is overpriced, chances are this grinder isn't marketed toward you. Stick with your cheap burr grinder or whirlybird, if you're happy with it.

The encore produces more fines which leads to over extraction - however the encore is a damn good grinder - more so with the upgraded burrs. The advantage of this grinder is the flat burrs designed for filter coffee, the ability to upgrade to ssp burrs (though the gen 2 burrs are good enough for me), the anti static tech - and the ability to single dose with very little retention.
As with all grinders as taste is very subjective all that matters is how it tastes for you.

I have a Rancilio Rocky that I use for drip and pour over. Will this provide a meaningful improvement to my coffee? I've had the Rocky for 10 years.

hey rocky bro! i've had mine 15! have you opened yours up every to look at the burrs? mine have little wear, and like you i keep wondering if i should get a new one. space/aesthetics is a big reason, my gf hates the look of rocky. but it just keeps working!

I make a pour-over, French press, or Aeropress depending on my mood.

Right - this was a totally normal thing to say. I have a moccamaster and had a baratza encore as well but am already impressed by the ode 2. To each their own. It's all good.

I did replace the burrs once several years ago but didn't really notice much of a difference which is why I haven't done so again. The grinder has been rock solid and after reading some of the negative reviews it seems like the Ode may have some annoyances that I don't want to add to my daily routine. Might just stick with the beast I know.

Hey, just thought I'd share our experience with this thing. We got this as a gift two years ago and decided to use it in place of our Baratza. After a couple of weeks the motor stopped working. Turns out we got a defective unit. No big deal.

We tried to replace the unit with Amazon but they pushed us to the manufactorer. They would not honor the return without photos and videos of the error. This was a frustrating experience. Eventually we got a replacement unit and guess what? That one was defective too. We went through customer support again and eventually after pushing, we got a full refund.

We like the design of the unit and the material quality, but the damn thing didn't work for us. For being as expensive as it is it should work flawlessly out of the box.

FWIW, I tried an ODE 2, nearly silent, wonderful grind, but IMHO, the motor is too small. One morning after a major jam, I packed it up and sent it back to them paying the return/restocking fee. Here is a video showing the unjam process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSY8mqLb0I4 It's easy, and I also want nothing to do with disassembly by removing screws before my first cup of coffee.

I too went DF83, but I think the DF64 is good too. After my Baratza Virtuoso motor burned out, I picked up an encore as my back up grinder, not bad for what it is. Tied me over while I researched grinders and waited for my DF83.

So since we established that fresh roasted beans are best....


what kind of water (water filter?) does everyone use for their coffee?

currently doing store brand ph 9.5+ alkaline water... better than my tap and fridge filter water (live in a moderately hard water region)

looking for home water filter options. any recommendations?

I am lazy so I use third wave water (medium roast profile) with distilled water.

You can probably replace the motor in your Bartaza... their customer service is amazing. Never giving mine up!
