I think MSI gave incorrect info to all these sellers. I contacted Newegg about it, and they basically said "check with the manufacturer."

Anyway, I bought this laptop from Newegg at $1599 and can confirm it is the 12900HX, not the 12900H.

Cheapest 4080 laptop so far. Same price at Walmart.
Any downsides? I had a bad experience with the hinges of my MSI laptop.

I only see $1599 minus 11% zip discount for a pretax total of $1488...

What am I missing?

Just a heads up. SD item description lists a Core i9-13900"HX", item in link is a Core i9-13900"H". Not really a computer guy, but there appears to be a notable spec difference.

The options can be configured, this is not HX (it's only available as 12900H)

How about you provide some proof/link?
I've linked the actual spec sheet from MSI' site of this particular model.

Don't the finance charges eat most of the zip discount? I'm seeing $6 fee plus over 30% (annualized) interest.

Every product listing of this model is 12900H (amazon, walmart, sears, posts on reddit, etc). It's quite possible the specs on MSI's sheet are wrong. Also I'd personally be more inclined to trust the source site in this case is newegg.com where its also listed as a 12900H. It's a good deal regardless, but asserting that it will be something better is misleading.

I'd also like to know if there are additional charges other than the $6 fee.
Is there a penalty for paying off the installments directly, for example?

IMO the main downside is the fan noise. In "extreme performance" mode (MSI Center), the fans sound like a vacuum cleaner. However, "balanced" mode isn't too bad (definitely noticeably louder than the SFF MSI Trident desktop it's replacing but doesn't bother me too much).

From what I can tell, this has a lot of cooling headroom. You can adjust the fans to very quiet and still be in acceptable 80s temp without performance sacrifice. Most extreme modes overclock it and there's huge diminishing returns with the increased power usage and fan noise. Having overkill cooling means your laptop can achieve quieter temps and act more like a normal laptop instead of a screamer.
