Nothing in life is certain, except for death, taxes and a Plex lifetime pass deal

I have had a Plex lifetime pass for over 15 years. I think I paid around $80 back then for it, so this seems like a good price. Worth every penny. I run Plex on a Synology server with 8 drives. If you use Apple products, I highly recommend the Infuse player. It is far superior to the Plex player in many ways.

I have JellyFin running, but it's nowhere near as refined as Plex. I have not run Emby, but I have heard it is not as good as Plex, but there are fanboys of all these apps.

Plex has just been around way longer and has had time to refine their software and add advanced features.

There is a free tier and a paid "Flex Pass" tier.

Here's some examples of how I use it:

- Listening to my personal music collection while I'm on the road (vacation/work/going for a walk).
- Watching my personal movie collection at any of our TV setups in our house.
- Watching various FAST channels (Free Ad Supported TV)... essentially expanding your entertainment options for free
- Watching our cable package outside of the house. I've watched collegiate volleyball games while at the college volleyball game (a few second delay for buffer and broadcast, but...)
- DVR'ing my favorite shows to save on DVR costs, etc.

All but the last two of the above can be done with the free tier, but...

While yes, it can play content downloaded illegally, a lot of us use it to play files we have RIPed from bluray libraries to mkv, which is a legal use case. There are other legal use cases that have also been mentioned.

Does this have an electronic programming guide that actually works? I would pull the trigger on this deal but I would like to record OTA tv on my HDHomerun Extend. I know Silicon Dust offers a dvr deal for $38 but I would prefer to pay once especially since OTA schedules should be free as part of the whole digital TV conversion nonsense done by FCC a while ago.
Their EPG is good. They switched away from a worse one years ago and now it's really solid. Use it to record from my HD HomeRun multiple times a week.

Infuse is just the player. Plex consists of a player and a server. Plex Pass unlocks additional functionality on the Plex server which yes you need. Check the Plex site for what you get with the paid tier. I can't remember all that it comes with.

You might be able to use Infuse without Plex, but you are missing out on a lot of great features Plex integration brings.

Is this at all useful for someone who just consumes movies from other servers? Like any benefit for just watching…?

Did you even read what you linked?

This week, LastPass revealed the hacker pulled off the breach by installing malware on an employee's home computer, enabling them to capture keystrokes on the machine. But one lingering question was how the malware was delivered.

PCMag has since learned the hacker targeted the Plex Media Server software to load the malware on the LastPass employee's home computer. But interestingly, the exploited flaw was nothing new. According to Plex, the vulnerability is nearly three years old and was patched long ago.
This has nothing to do with Plex vulnerabilities, which were patched three years before this hack of a person who used their software and happened to work for LastPass.

I've had it forever, Have they figured out a way to integrate IPTV services?
I'd love to be able to record all the content I get on IPTV.

I need to look into that.
other than that, it's awesome

Well if you use Infuse and pay for it, why even pay for the lifetime pass?

One thing that's annoying about Plex is how it tries to be helpful. For about 2/3 of my collection that's fine, but the other 1/3 has no metadata...so plex episodifies the filenames titles that makes them indistinguishable.

This is in "browse by folder" mode. There apparently is no way to browse as a filename.

It does have a guide, but if live TV and DVR are your focus then I'd highly recommend Channels DVR or Emby instead. Although Plex has finally made some progress over the years, live TV has never been their focus and they've frequently let show stopping bugs remain for years before even acknowledging them.
